Is it any surprise that one of the biggest franchises on the planet is engaging some of the biggest stars in Hollywood? Ever since the Disney/Lucasfilm deal went down and J.J. Abrams started work on "Star Wars: Episode 7," there have been no shortage of names rumored for the project. Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan, Jack O’Connell, Alex Pettyfer, Saoirse Ronan, Sullivan Stapleton and, most recently, Jesse Plemons have all been said to be eyed or have read or been considered. But before all of them, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were reported to be returning to reprise their turns as Luke, Han and Leia. And it seems they will be a crucial part of the new trilogy.

The 10 Best "Child" Performances Of 2013
The legendary W.C. Fields once said "never work with animals or children," but that advice thankfully has been broken time and time again, and especially in 2013, when younger thespians were able to truly show their chops (not to mention the cat performances from "Inside Llewyn Davis”). We wanted to highlight their contributions in a stand-alone feature, since so many of our favorite movies this year were enhanced and made real by younger performers.

Venice Review: David Gordon Green's 'Joe' Starring Nicolas Cage & Tye Sheridan

“Joe” unites a pair of talents somewhat on the comeback trail. David Gordon Green’s once-lofty critical reputation—the filmmaker was once lauded as a successor to Terrence Malick—took something of a hit after a left-turn into poorly-received studio comedies like “Your Highness” and "The Sitter," but this year’s “Prince Avalanche” seemed to mark a return to the lo-fi indies he made his name with. Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage’s status as a major star and as one of his generation’s most acclaimed actors has been threatened in recent years by a series of low-rent pictures, seemingly taken for the paycheck alone, which have seen the actor increasingly descend into either self-parody, or deep boredom.

Call it the influence of Terrence Malick or just pure performance, but take any recent film dabbling in the natural world from a young boy's perspective and you can bet actor Tye Sheridan's name was hovering around the cast list. Since “The Tree of Life,” the 16-year-old has landed lead roles in “Mud,” opposite Matthew McConaughey, and David Gordon Green's upcoming “Joe” with Nicolas Cage. His next project finds him facing another major name, but thankfully with a different genre slant.

It looks like Hollywood loves Gillian Flynn, and fans of the author have a lot to look forward to in 2014. Adaptations of two of her books are on the way, with David Fincher tackling "Gone Girl" and "Sarah's Key" helmer Gilles Paquet-Brenner taking on "Dark Places." And the latter is rounding out its already pretty stellar cast as it gears up to start rolling in front of cameras.

As always, David Gordon Green is zigging instead of zagging, side-stepping any expectations of the career choices he "should" be making and following his passions wherever it takes him. With "Prince Avalanche" now in theaters, and the upcoming "Manglehorn" starring Al Pacino gearing up to shoot this fall, Green will take a pit stop between those two efforts in Venice and Toronto to present his latest, "Joe." And both director and star Nicolas Cage, are very excited about this one turned out.

The Matthew McConaughey renaissance continues (or as he has been calling it in interviews, “a McConaissance” – no, seriously) and we’ll see him next in Jeff Nichols’ highly anticipated third feature “Mud.” The movie played at Cannes last year and Sundance a few months ago, and it gets its theatrical release on April 26th, and as it heads to SXSW we’re getting a look at two new pictures and a Mondo poster.

With Steven Soderbergh stepping away from the director's chair, we'd argue that David Gordon Green is one of only a few American filmmakers who share his spirit of cinematic adventure. He's helmed everything from no-budget indie dramas to big, mainstream studio comedies. Last month, Green hit the Sundance Film Festival with his latest, "Prince Avalanche," a remake of an Icelandic movie no one has heard of. And for his followup? A gritty Southern drama with Nicolas Cage and "The Tree Of Life" star Tye Shreridan.

To say that we're rooting for Jeff Nichols would be an understatement. The helmer has delivered two great films so far, early into this career, "Shotgun Stories" and "Take Shelter." With the buzz growing around his name, he was able to snag Matthew McConaughey to star in his latest effort "Mud." After after premiering last spring at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie is ready to come home and make a U.S. premiere very soon at the Sundance Film Festival.

While Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" undoubtedly marked the start of the ascent of Jessica Chastain, it also provided a great debut for its young stars, Hunter McCracken and Tye Sheridan. While the former has yet to book any more projects, the latter has been making his way onto more films, most recently starring in another Cannes premeire, Jeff Nichols' "Mud." And Sheridan is keeping it southern, joining a movie that will have him getting in the Cage.
