Watching inspirational movies is often like eating ice cream. While you're taking it in, it's sweet and immensely pleasurable, but as soon as you've reached the end, all that's left is an empty carton. Maybe we won't go as far as saying this kind of cinema is empty, but those swooned by "The Blind Side" or "The Help" have little to ruminate on after the underdog stories are well digested (aside from a vague, lingering 'Uh, was that racist?' sentiment). There is also something very artificial and manufactured, as those films pretended to capture life at its most passionate when they were both smartly manipulative pieces of melodrama.

16 Oscar nominations. That's how many nods Harvey Weinstein conjured up for The Weinstein Company this year, another testament to the mega-producer's grip on the awards season and further evidence that nobody can rep a movie quite like Harv. And this inspirational doc might just take the award.

...and then there were 15. Just like that, the field for the films battling for the five slots at the Oscars for Best Documentary just got a lot smaller. The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences announced the shortlist for the award and once again, there is no love for Werner Herzog.

If we didn't know any better, it's looks like Magnolia is making moves to become some serious players in the indie film biz. They've already snatched up the rights to Lars Von Trier's forthcoming "Melancholia" and now they've added another buzzworthy film to their slate.
