Under The Skin
The word "mindblowing" is tossed around a lot, particularly during the summer season when blockbusters bring forth expensive, explosion filled spectacles. But few movies this year will truly define that term, and certainly none of them will be as unique and distinctive as Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin." A film we named as one of The Best Films Of 2014 So Far..., if you missed it on the big screen, you'll soon be able to catch up with it at home.

Best of 2014, midway
Here's a bold statement: 2014 is looking like a pretty damn good year for movies so far. We've had a few strong ones in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013 were all overflowing with goodness), but a little less than halfway through this year, and the discerning moviegoer has been spoiled with choices. Of course, there's been a lot of swill, but from the blockbuster to tiny foreign indies, there's been plenty worth checking out.

Under The Skin
“Jonathan and I have been talking about this project for three years… I love his work, that’s what initially drew me to this project,” Scarlett Johansson said about “Under The Skin” in a new featurette by A24. It’s easy to see why Johansson is so enamored with director Jonathan Glazer. He directed “Sexy Beast,” which made for one of Ben Kingsley’s best performances ever, he also helmed “Birth” which certainly ranks up there with some of Nicole Kidman’s best, plus it introduced most of us to the amazingness of composer Alexandre Desplat. And perhaps it was a leap of faith considering how much the picture is about the abstract, the unsaid and the mysteriousness of otherworldly beings, but Johansson’s instinct paid off: Glazer’s latest, “Under The Skin” is easily one of the best movies of the year.

Under The Skin
More than 10 years in the making from stem to stern, Jonathan Glazer’s enigmatic, genuinely unnerving sci-fi drama “Under the Skin” starring Scarlett Johansson was unleashed last week at BAMcinématek with the director on hand along with producer James Wilson. It’s a visionary, deeply engrossing piece of filmmaking, with minor echoes of Stanley Kubrick and louder reverberations of Nicolas Roeg, but still a wholly unique and hauntingly distinct piece of cinema. Featuring little dialogue, a fierce and immersive sound design and a mind-disquieting score by Mica Levi, “Under the Skin” is all sensory sound and vision, as close as we get these days to pure cinema.

Jonathan Glazer, Under The Skin
It has been close to a decade since commercial and music video director-turned-filmmaker Jonathan Glazer released his sophomore feature film, “Birth.” Following his slick and stylish debut, the gangster flick “Sexy Beast,” marked a leap forward stylistically, with longer takes, a bold visual approach and a carefully considered integration of narrative and score. And now with his third film, “Under The Skin” (our review) Glazer has again pushed the language of his filmmaking into bold and truly exciting places. (Indeed, check out our 5 Reasons Why It's One Of The Best Films Of The Year).

Ranked: Jonathan Glazer's Music Videos
As part of our continuing efforts to make everyone in the world go see "Under the Skin," which opens this Friday, earlier in the week we featured a rundown of director Jonathan Glazer's top ten commercials. But, advertising is not the only string to his bow (though no doubt the most lucrative), Glazer is also a well-known music video director, who, while not quite as prolific in this area, still boasts more than a couple of touchstones in his short videography. What's also notable about his promos is that within them, like with his commercial work, you can trace the evolution of the stylistic elements that Glazer would bring to his features, from the crisp lines and bold colors of the poolside terrace in "Sexy Beast," to the somber, chilly palette of "Birth," to the imagery of "Under the Skin" that ranges from gritty to sleek to surreal. It's a treat to watch a director as visually confident as Glazer work in a longer format, but it's also a treat to look through his back catalogue to see that confidence grow and mature.

Under The Skin
If you’re a random male pedestrian and a gal who looks like Scarlett Johansson ever pulls up and offers to take you to her place for a quickie, the logical thing to do would be run like hell, since this could only be either a sting or a sign of the apocalypse, no matter how good looking a fellow you are. But lust trumps logic as Johansson lures a bevy of bros to their doom in “Under the Skin."
