Scarlett Johansson's Banned Super Bowl Ad
On the surface, a movie about an alien coming to Earth, hiding among us and harvesting human bodies seems familiar and perhaps even predictable. But not when it's in the hands of Jonathan Glazer. To truly capture the experience of a creature from another realm, operating openly among humans, he largely shot many sequences in the Scarlett Johansson starring-film with non-professional actors, sometimes guerrilla style, with multiple cameras hidden, but on the move.

20 Best 2014 Films We've Already Seen
The more OCD among us here at Playlist Towers find it a source of constant aggravation that release dates vary so much from territory to territory, and festivals often get premieres a full 18-or-so months before a film gains a proper U.S. release, that doing a cut-and-dried list of any given year’s movies becomes less science than art. And while it’s an art that has already yielded our first magnum opus of the year, the 100 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2014, (and we should probably be awarded the rest of January off as a result) there’s still a category of film we’ve left unmined: those movies that we saw and reviewed in 2013 at festivals or sneak screenings or parts foreign that won’t be in theaters until 2014.

A24 Release Dates Under The Skin Enemy Locke
While many modern cinephiles are going gaga for adventurous producers like Annapurna Pictures ("Zero Dark Thirty," "The Master," "Her," "American Hustle" to name a few), there's also another game in town that's quietly building up an impressive roster. Barely a year old, indie distribution company A24 has made quite a name for itself in the last year for acquiring domestic rights to auteur-driven indie fare such as Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa," Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," and James Ponsoldt's "The Spectacular Now" (some of our favorite films of the past year).

Jonathan Glazer's 'Under The Skin' Sets Spring 2014 U.K. Release Date

Under The Skin
How much do we love Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin"? Let us count the ways. It was one of our 5 Favourite Films At Venice and simply put, one of the best movies we watched all year. Our fascinating talk with Jonathan Glazer in Toronto only further solidified our passion for the film, and simply put, this story of sexy manhunting alien (played by Scarlett Johansson) goes far, far beyond what that logline suggests. Starred Up
While it may seem like we're still only in the midst of the various awards season campaigns, nominations have already started to be handed out across the pond. Over the weekend, the European Film Awards dropped their list of the movies being honored this year and it has been quickly followed this morning with the British Independent Film Awards, who are shining a light on another batch of worthy films and talent.

Under The Skin
It may have taken nine years for Jonathan Glazer to deliver his third feature-length film, but the wait for "Under The Skin" has been more than worth it. Knocking out Playlist writers who saw the movie in Venice, Telluride and Toronto (see our review and 5 Reasons Why Jonathan Glazer's 'Under The Skin' Is One Of The Best Films Of The Year), the film is a visually dazzling piece of work, packed with enough ideas that you'll need a couple of viewings to dig beneath its many layers. The first teaser dropped a few weeks back, but now a longer version—almost twice the length—is here and it's another great peek at the movie.

TIFF 2013 Wrap-Up
Though coming hot on the heels of Telluride and overlapping this year with Venice, the Toronto International Film Festival is anything but a third string pony. In fact it's probably the largest, glitziest and most glamorous of the fall festival season players and no-one doubts that Toronto knows how to roll out the red carpet as well as any of them. But outside the stars, closed off streets and screaming fans, the programmers also make festivities a cinephile’s dream year after year. 2013 was no different.

Under The Skin
It has been close to a decade since commercials and music video director turned filmmaker Jonathan Glazer released his sophomore feature film, “Birth.” Following his slick and stylish debut, the gangster flick “Sexy Beast,” the film marked a leap forward stylistically, with longer takes, a bold visual approach and a carefully considered integration of narrative and score. And now with his third film, “Under The Skin,” Glazer has again pushed the language of his filmmaking into bold and truly exciting places.

It's farewell for another year to mosquitos, vaporettos and incomprehensibly rude Italian film critics who insist on checking their email mid-screening, because the 70th Venice Film Festival wrapped up on Saturday. For a festival that had seen quite a few twists and turns, it felt appropriate that it ended with Bernardo Bertolucci pulling a few surprises, shunning the more lauded films in the line-up to bestow the Golden Lion on "Sacro GRA," the first Italian film to win the top prize in fifteen years and the first documentary to ever manage the feat.
