Under The Skin
This morning saw the first official press screening of "Under The Skin," the first new film in nine years from "Sexy Beast" and "Birth" helmer Jonathan Glazer, which premieres officially at the Venice Film Festival tonight. But as you'll know if you were reading over the weekend, the film's already been unveiled across the Atlantic as part of the line-up at the Telluride Film Festival.

Under The Skin
To say that we've been looking forward to Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin" would be an understatement. The filmmaker made his name with music videos, before turning to the feature film world, dropping his sizzling debut "Sexy Beast" in 2000, followed four years later by "Birth," which, in this writer's opinion, is one of the best films of the 2000s. The wait has been a bit longer for Glazer's sci-fi effort "Under The Skin," which has taken its time from filming through post-production, but it looks like patience has paid off.

Under The Skin
If you’re a random male pedestrian and a gal who looks like Scarlett Johansson ever pulls up and offers to take you to her place for a quickie, the logical thing to do would be run like hell, since this could only be either a sting or a sign of the apocalypse, no matter how good looking a fellow you are. But lust trumps logic as Johansson lures a bevy of bros to their doom in “Under the Skin,” which screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival.

Under The Skin
Yeah, we know, it's a bit ridiculous. Day one has just closed on the Venice Film Festival, Telluride kicks off in a couple days and by this time next week, the first 24 hours in TIFF will be nearing an end. It's that time of year, a bonanza of movie related goodness, and aren't you just glad it's not TV Spot #9 for some blockbuster movie you already forgot about? Long story short, there's a whole bunch of stuff headed to Colorado and with it some new images to go with it.

Telluride 2013 Lineup 'Labor Day' 'Gravity'
The Venice Film Festival kicked off today, but for those of you choosing to head to Colorado instead of Italy, the organizers at the Telluride Film Festival have unveiled their slate for 2013. And as usual, it's a mix of selections from both Cannes and Venice, along with a couple of premieres and some interesting curiosities.

If you look at the release schedule for the next couple of weeks, it's clear that we're entering the late August/early September slow season. Half-formed young adult adaptations, thrillers that star Ethan Hawke because Nicolas Cage was unavailable, 3D boyband concert movies and a Riddick sequel, with only "The World's End" and "You're Next" to save the day.

With festival season fast approaching, undoubtedly one of our most anticipated films is "Under The Skin." The long-in-the-works project, an adaptation of a novel by Michel Faber ("The Crimson Petal and White"), marks the return to feature filmmaking by commercials/promo wizard Jonathan Glazer, who made a storming debut with the excellent "Sexy Beast," and followed it up with the even better, much undervalued "Birth."

After a weighty first announcement for this year's TIFF earlier in the week, eyes turned across the Atlantic this morning to the reveal of the line-up for the 70th Venice Film Festival, which precedes Toronto by about a week. We already knew the festival was opening with Alfonso Cuaron's hotly-anticipated 3D space adventure "Gravity," and an educated guess at the line-up could be made from looking at which films among the TIFF announcement weren't world premieres, but the official roster was revealed at a press conference in Rome this morning, and it's once more, a doozy.

Tuxedos are being rented, red carpets shampooed and cleaned and the city of Toronto bracing itself as this year's Toronto International Film Festival is now just over a month away. And this morning, organizers have dropped the first wave of titles coming to Canada, and it looks like cinephiles will be in for a big treat this year.

As the festival season wore on in 2012, one movie we kept hoping would pop up at Venice, Telluride, Toronto, London or Rome, was Jonathan Glazer's long awaited "Under The Skin." The film shot last year, and has been in post-production even since and we figured it might cross the finish line soon, but it appears there is still more work to be done on the movie.
