There's a certain sense of heightened and/or alternate reality pervading the theater releases this weekend. On the one hand, we have a film about magicians, professionals who create the illusion of having manipulated real world physics; plus, it takes place in Vegas, a city that, unto and of itself, is an entirely other universe. In the other corner is Harmony Korine's new picture, an exploitation flick where the Wizard of Oz leads the starlets of "High School Musical" in a coke-fueled game of Russian Roulette. And then, somewhere in the middle, "Little Miss Sunshine" gets kidnapped by a gasoline-hose-wielding sociopath.

Review: 'Upside Down' Envisions A Lifeless 'Romeo and Juliet' Tale With Sporadic Sci-Fi Escapism & Visual Thrills

In Juan Juan Solanas.' fantasy romance "Upside Down," twin planets exist with opposite gravities and social restrictions of Dickensian thematic heft. "Up Top" boasts gleaming skyscrapers, well-dressed citizens, and the majority of wealth, while "Down Below" struggles in poverty and mud-stained existence. Between the two, Adam (Jim Sturgess) and Eden (Kirsten Dunst) live out their own interstellar "Romeo and Juliet," torn apart by family as well as physics. If a smirk emerged from hearing any of these names or locations, it will remain over the course of Juan Solanas.' indulgent swirl of symbolism; but that doesn't mean there aren't moments of visual splendor and escapist fun to temporarily break up the expression.

It's coming on three years now since shooting began on "Upside Down," but the movie is finally making its way to theaters, and it's been spruced up with a 3D conversion. But one can't help but wonder if the timing on this just isn't that ideal. Why?

Geez, we had pretty much forgotten about this one. With production starting over two years ago, it has taken a very long time for this movie to see the light of day. While there has been smattering of stills and even a trailer at the beginning of the year, "Upside Down," starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, has failed to materialize, not even with a perfunctory festival screening somewhere on the circuit. But the film will finally be coming to theaters next year, apparently tricked out a bit to dazzle your eyeballs.

For a while now, folks have been anticipating "Upside Down" based on its stars -- Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst -- and its high-minded premise: a futuristic story following Adam (Jim Sturgess) a seemingly ordinary guy who is holding on to the memory of Eve (Dunst), a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent place with its own gravity. Well, after a long wait (production started nearly two years ago) the first trailer has arrived and it's...uneven to say the least.

It was almost a year ago that we showed you the first images from the sci-fi romance “Upside Down,” a film we’re particularly interested in starring Kirsten Dunst and “One Day” actor Jim Sturgess, and a project which Dunst recently referred to as "kind of like an accessible 'Brazil.’” Now, some more images have surfaced of the bright and cheery Sturgess courtesy of the fansite Jim Sturgess Online.

For a moment there, it seemed like Kirsten Dunst might have found her career floundering in the wake of the Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy, but not only has the actress found her footing, her upcoming roster of films would be the envy of any thesp in Hollywood. There is no better indication than "Melancholia" that Dunst is moving in a new direction. While opinion may be split on Lars Von Trier's film, there is no denying that Dunst's turn in the lead role is easily the best performance of her career, and those on the Croisette thought so too as she walked home with the Best Actress prize this spring. And unlike the events in the film, the future for Dunst after "Melancholia" is looking very bright with a number of promising projects on the horizon.

The Influence Of 'Once Upon A Time In America' & More From Lone Scherfig & Jim Sturgess About The FilmThere’s the average romantic comedy with the meet cute or initial hatred between the inevitable lovers, and then there’s “One Day.” Rather than featuring a traditional love story narrative, set over days, weeks, or even months, “One Day” visits Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) on July 15 every year, starting in the ‘80s. The audience gets a glimpse of where they are--and where they are in relation to each other--each year on that day, creating 23 mini-films in one. They’re friends who are constantly bordering on being much more, even as others enter their lives.

The plot is a little out there, but we're definitely curious for the forthcoming sci-fi romance "Upside Down" starring Kirsten Dunst and a bearded Jim Sturgess.
