Relativity Media Will Distribute in U.S.Well, that's one film we can take out of awards contention for 2011. One of Steven Soderbergh's upcoming films "Haywire" won't be released till January 20, 2012. As we've been saying all along, Relativity Media has retained the domestic rights, with Lionsgate holding on to the foreign rights. Lionsgate was all set to release in the U.S. as well, until restructuring gave partner Relativity its own domestic arm for distribution. The initial date was April, 2011, which Soderbergh confirmed himself, but it was never officially announced; the restructuring deal points took much longer than anyone expected. Then August, 2011 became the next date everyone was zeroing on, but they too lost that window of opportunity when the deal pushed back the chance to release trailers and posters.

Nicholas Ray is a truly fascinating figure. The filmmaker, who was born 100 years ago this year, directed a series of hugely influential pictures in the 1940s and 1950s, most notably "Johnny Guitar" and "Rebel Without a Cause," but never quite got the respect he was due in the States (although the Cahiers du Cinema crowd were obsessed with him), and spent much of his life in the throes of drug and alcohol addiction, working on difficult, experimental projects.

Film Described As "A Very Serious Oscar Contender"With the Cannes Film Festival lineup more or less set -- there will likely be a few more film announcements in the next couple of weeks as is usually the case -- the organizers at the Venice, Toronto, Telluride and other fall film festivals have already been making calls to try and get big-ticket films slotted into their festivals. Among the numerous high-profile films talked about as possibilities for Cannes was Tomas Alfredson's highly anticipated "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy." Before the lineup for Cannes was announced, reports circulated that it wasn't likely to make it as the film was still in the midst of post-production. As expected, a fall premiere is in the works and at least one major film festival has already come calling at least a month ago to land the film.
