Ever had the feeling, when the credits roll and the lights go up, that you’ve been watching a completely different film to everyone else? Welcome to our morning, which was spent at a screening of the last Cannes 2013 competition film, Roman Polanski’s adaptation of the David Ives broadway play “Venus in Fur.”

Venus In Furs
Of late, Roman Polanski has been taking inspiration from stage. His last feature film, "Carnage," was based on an award-winning play, while his forthcoming "Venus In Fur" is also ripped from the boards, adapting the work of David Ives. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival last year the picture is finally making its way to U.S. theatres, and a new trailer is here to show you what the filmmaker has in store.

Venus In Furs, Polanski
No other review we delivered out of the Cannes Film Festival drew as much ire (and trolling) as Jessica Kiang's take on Roman Polanski's "Venus In Fur." Over 115 commenters weighed in after she declared that the latest from the auteur has "wit and verbal dexterity on display" but "has little insight to give us into anything except the sexual hubris of an aging man, and frankly, we’re not sure we give a damn." Zing. Well you'll be able to decide for yourself soon enough.

Cannes 2013, header
With the actual schedule released today (cue charts and diagrams as attendees try to work out how to be in eight places at one time), the final pieces are falling into place for this year's Cannes Film Festival, and it's shaping up to be a terrific couple of weeks. The initial lineup was already impressive, but the addition of a couple of titles we were surprised not to see in the original announcement has made the selection even more an embarrassment of riches. As such, we were hard pressed to pick a top ten, but finally settled on the following choices, that, along with the honorable mentions, we feel represent the strongest of what is a very solid lineup. It should be noted that there's a great showing by the U.S. in this selection, as there is for French-language movies, which is reflective of the festival overall. With Steven Spielberg the head of the Cannes Competition jury too, it feels like Franco-American relations are at an all-time high, cinematically speaking at least.

We're now less than a week away from the Cannes Film Festival rolling out the red carpet, and among the heavy hitters making their way to the Croisette will be none other than Roman Polanski. He's returning with another modest, character driven, largely one location movie and something that appears to be even smaller than "Carnage."

It's always a weird time in the lead up to the Cannes Film Festival, with arthouse news clashing with the latest intel from the summer blockbuster slate. So, keeping that in mind, we're taking a quick break to give you the first look at Roman Polanski's "Venus In Fur."

The Surprises & Notable Absences Of The 2013 Cannes Line-Up

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

As usual, sifting the actual fact from the speculation when it comes to the line-up of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival has been a little tricky. We know the opener -- Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," the closer -- "Zulu," with Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom, and as of yesterday, the Un Certain Regard headliner, in the shape of Sofia Coppola's "Bling Ring."

When the next Roman Polanski film, "Venus In Fur," was first announced in September, it was reported that shooting would take place in Paris in November. Well, the schedule got delayed a bit, but cameras are now rolling. However the production has seen the co-star get swapped out.
