And So It Begins, 'The Descendants' & 'Martha Marcy May Marlene' Lead Gotham Award Nominees

Well folks, the first batch of nominees this awards season have been revealed, with the Gotham Independent Film Award nominations landing this morning, giving an early peek at what will likely be some strong contenders down the line. Bear in mind, the Gotham Awards have little bearing on the eventual Oscar nods with only last year's Best Feature winner "Winter's Bone" factoring into the proceedings at the Kodak Theater. However, it does represent a good chunk of what you might see at the Independent Spirit Awards later in the year and if anything, these nominations confirm that Fox Searchlight is going to have another banner year on the statue circuit.

For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo. It's not surprising that William Shakespeare's tale of star-crossed lovers has provided the inspiration for dozens of films over the years, but there seems to be something in the water at the moment in particular: Disney had a surprise hit at the start of the year with their (very loose) animated take, "Gnomeo & Juliet," while Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth are gearing up for a more faithful version, while Keira Knightley and Lily Collins are supposedly competing for the lead in "Rosaline," which will focus on the titular girl, who Romeo is in love with before he gets all flustered by Juliet.

With the popularity and critical acclaim of HBO's "Game of Thrones," David Benioff and D. B. Weiss' adaptation of George R. R. Martin's "Fire And Ice" series of novels, it was only a matter time before we started seeing the vast array of acting talent on that show moving on to film projects during the production downtime, or after their stints have ended (we'll politely overlook Jason Momoa's "performance" in "Conan").

Review: 'Higher Ground' Revels In Its Callow, Low Blows To Catholicism

Everyone's got something to say about religion. Each book that serves as the foundation for a theology forges our behavior in some shape or form, and while structuring your life on what each book preaches can lead to catharsis, kindness, and healing, it can also be the birth of intolerance and destruction. That's not to say people aren't ultimately to blame; though certain things are good or bad no matter how you spin them, we do tend to interpret things how we see fit. This odd mixed bag of morals often leads to serious backlash, manifested in outright intense debates or scathing art pieces. "Up In The Air" actress Vera Farmiga sets her target using the latter weapon, questioning her own faith in directorial debut "Higher Ground." Sadly, the film feels more like the voice of a junior high student going through a phase of atheism rather than the thoughts of a mature, rational adult.

Michael C. Hall has had no problem being a TV star. He broke out in "Six Feet Under" and currently leads the popular "Dexter," but his moves into film have been less successful. "Gamer" was terrible and "Peep World" never lived up to the promise it had on paper. But he's hoping that James Manos Jr., the man who adapted Jeff Lindsay's "Dexter," will have the key to break him into something worthwhile.

9 More Revelations From Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga & The Film's Burgeoning Action StarDuncan Jones' suspense-filled sci-fi-ish time-twister, "Source Code," starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright, isn't particular hard to follow, but if you haven't seen the film, you might not quite understand the conceit yet. Essentially it's like "Groundhog's Day" only set within the framework a sci-fi thriller. In the film (and all of this is taken from the official Apple trailer synopsis, so do not cry spoilers, please) decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man and he discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.
