Veronica Mars
Those eager to return to Neptune, California finally earned the chance this past weekend, as Warner Bros.’ crowd-funded “Veronica Mars” movie landed on both VOD and 291 screens. Or so they thought: the continuation of the Kristen Bell sleuth series was always going to be scrutinized because of its controversial Kickstarter origins, but following a slow theatrical weekend take and many backers left without a working digital copy, some needed reassurance has come courtesy of the show’s creator.

Need For Speed
Well, this was unexpected (that is if you’re not attentively looking at Friday and Saturday numbers with a sniper’s eyes). You might think, considering the success of “The Fast & Furious” series, that something similarly adrenaline-focused like the vroom-fast “Need For Speed” film would be critic-proof, and that audiences—who have to wait an extra year for a new ‘Fast & Furious’ film—might check into the junior series starring Aaron Paul. But it was not to be. While Disney was already projecting low (at least low for a would-be car franchise) $20 million numbers for “Need For Speed,” the film (which was roasted by critics; here’s our review) sputtered to the finish line with $17.8 million at the box office, stalling at the number 3 position for its opening weekend debut.

Veronica Mars
After years of crying, wishing, hoping, praying, petitioning and more, "Veronica Mars" fans are finally getting the movie they've been waiting for, thanks to Kickstarter. The crowd-sourced flick has a distribution boost thanks to Warner Bros., but not the marketing muscle. The big question waiting to be answered is if niche movies can be financially sustainable enough to make future efforts viable. And while the box office and VOD results this weekend will be analyzed by Monday morning, for everyone else, they just want to see the damn thing.

6 TV Shows We'd Like To See Get The Big-Screen
Even for the non-marshmallows among us, the “Veronica Mars” movie, which hits theaters this week (our SXSW review here), being brought back from the dead by a combination of fan activism, creator and cast agitation and Kickstarter-related chutzpah, is at the very least an interesting phenomenon. The long-defunct TV show that gets its day on the big screen with original cast intact is a rare and precious event achieved by only a few, but the possibility is often endlessly bandied around for many for years after the show has ended.

Veronica Mars movie
The mere existence of a "Veronica Mars" movie seems downright miraculous in and of itself. This was a beloved but barely viewed cult television series that aired on the now-defunct UPN for three unceremonious seasons before being banished to the illusory land of "canceled before its time." Years after it was axed, it was resurrected via the magic of internet-based crowd funding (which is kind of bizarre, especially considering one of its producers is Joel Silver, a man responsible for "The Matrix" trilogy and "Non-Stop"). This is a movie that the fans desperately wanted, so much so that they paid for it themselves. So it is something of a relief to report that the movie version of the series, while not without its flaws, fundamentally maintains the heart and intrigue of the television series, but in a miniaturized, less nuanced form. The question is whether or not anyone who isn't a die-hard devotee of the series will care.

Veronica Mars
Hollywood will be taking a very close look at how "Veronica Mars" plays out. The Kickerstarter funded movie, with distribution backing from Warner Bros., is the first major test if niche audience fandom can translate into a mainstream success. The basic questions is whether or not the movie goer who didn't watch the final episode of the TV show seven years ago, will care if the character is back in 2014? Well, the movie is going to bring audiences up to speed as much as possible.

Veronica Mars movie
It does not seem long ago when we were merely discussing the possibility of a “Veronica Mars” movie. Its Kickstarter campaign was the subject of much scrutiny and debate, but the TV show’s fans have spoken, and now we’re just one month away from the movie’s theatrical release. Co-written and directed by the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, the movie stars Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Francis Capra, Enrico Colantoni, Ken Marino, Martin Starr, and Gaby Hoffman. And if a “Veronica Mars” movie is simply not enough to appease you, then maybe its accompanying soundtrack will do the trick.
