Premiering at TIFF way back in 2011 and arriving in theaters nearly two years later, it isn't exactly the best indication that "Violet & Daisy" is a winner. But with Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel playing teen killers, and with James Gandolfini popping in for some support, perhaps this will at least be a curiosity worth tracking down.

The new “Violet & Daisy” poster has landed and it is quite a doozy, with a strikingly bold concatenation of lollipops and guns setting an eye-popping tone for the latest from “Precious” writer Geoffrey Fletcher.

Over the weekend, this writer finished reading "Persuader," one of Lee Child's dozen plus books centering on ex-military man turned drifter/problem solver Jack Reacher, and it only underscores how divisive the casting of Tom Cruise is in "Jack Reacher," based on "One Shot." In the books, Reacher is a six foot something, larger than life bruiser whose sheer physical size can be intimdating to those who cross his path -- not exactly the kind of image you get from the 5'7" Cruise. But with a new image now landing, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is ready to address the doubters.

After winning an Oscar for his screenplay for "Precious," Geoffrey Fletcher probably had options. The fact that directing "Violet & Daisy" -- a candy-colored crime story about two teen girl killers and their latest target -- was his ultimate choice is worthy of note in and of itself. Fletcher could have stayed in the vocabulary and landscape of "Precious" -- or, less charitably, thrown a rock and hit another indie film tale of life in the big city -- but instead stepped up, and out, to do something completely different as his directorial debut.

Geoffrey Fletcher's (screenwriter of "Precious") directorial debut "Violet & Daisy" has just received a boost of British class, as Marianne Jean-Baptiste has joined the cast of the film. Who? She's probably best known for her outstanding and Academy Award nominated performance in Mike Leigh's "Secrets & Lies," but unfortunately hasn't found anything since to match the profile that film gave her. But hopefully, her appearance here will help turn that around (though she is a longstanding fixture on the TV series "Without A Trace.")
