Blue Jasmine Cate Blanchett
We’ve known for quite some time that Brad Pitt would be narrating Malick’s long-delayed universe-spanning documentary “Voyage Of Time” and while it was also revealed that Emma Thompson had done some work on the film as well, it appears that she’s the latest causalty to Malick’s freewheeling ways.

Tree Of Life Terrence Malick
When Terrence Malick's longtime editor Billy Weber told us last year that the filmmaker's forever developing "Voyage Of Time" was coming in 2014, it seemed to good to be true. A lawsuit cropped up (since settled, apparently) and Malick of course has been busy on two other projects, "Knight Of Cups" and his untitled Austin music scene movie (and supposedly, a director's cut of "The Tree Of Life"). So you won't be too surprised to learn that this project is still a couple of year away.

The Tree Of Life
So here we are in 2014, still awaiting the status of Terrence Malick's "Knight Of Cups," his untitled music scene movie and the documentary "Voyage Of Time" (and fyi, it looks like the lawsuit around that last one is on its way to a settlement). So let's take this moment to look back, shall we?

Tree Of Life Terrence Malick
The intimacy and effortless aesthetic in the films of Terrence Malick can easily persuade the viewer into an alternate reality where just the director, DP, and actors ferry off to some field and capture magic; in actuality, their productions are just like most others — complicated, crowded entities, full of people both understanding and more opposed to Malick's process. The filmmaker's long-gestating documentary, “Voyage of Time,” inspired the latter camp to flare up this past summer, when investment group Seven Seas Partnership sued the filmmaker over breach of contract, but now Malick's side has fired back, with a lengthy rebuttal reversing the blame.

At the start of the week, news surfaced that Terrence Malick was facing a lawsuit from the investors of his long-developing trio of films, "The Voyage Of Time," over alleged, persistent delays in completing the years in the making project. As with most Malick projects, the exact makeup of the creative team tends to kept under wraps but one of the juicier parts of the reports that circulated noted that "an Academy Award-winning special effects artist" had walked off the film. Legendary FX talent Douglas Trumbull—who won an Academy Scientific and Engineering Award in 1993, worked with Malick on "The Tree Of Life" and was reported previously to be helping on 'Voyage'—has been speculated in some quarters to be that person. But as he revealed to us, he was never really involved in the first place.

Tree Of Life Terrence Malick
Is Terrence Malick's "The Voyage Of Time" the cinematic emperor with no clothes? The film has been at least six years in the making, if not longer, with more rumors than fact surrounding its eventual shape (one IMAX documentary or two?) and even when it might actually be released (earlier this year, Malick's longtime editor Billy Weber told us it would be coming in 2014). But it seems the money behind the movie, coming from investment group Seven Seas Partnership, are getting fed up of waiting. THR reports they are suing the filmmaker and his Sycamore Pictures for breach of contract, and they want their $3.3 million back, any intellectual property and lost profits. Their complaint? Malick simply hasn't delivered and "dedicated his energies to four other films in the last five years." And it's easy to see why they're upset.

While Terrence Malick has become somewhat known for cutting people out of his movies (just yesterday we learned Michael Shannon was on the chopping block for "To The Wonder," and we have a whole feature devoted to actors who got snipped), in one case he's going back and putting footage back into a movie. You might remember that two years ago, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki revealed that Malick went back to the 300 plus miles of footage he shot for "The Tree Of Life" with plans for a six hour version of the movie. And while the running time is yet to be determined, and we haven't really heard anything about it since, it does seem that Malick is preparing a longer cut of the movie.

Terrence Malick's recent burst of creative energy is sort of staggering. After completing just four films in forty-two years, he has dropped two films in two years (2011's "The Tree of Life" and 2012's "To the Wonder"), with "Knight of Cups" wrapping up, "Lawless" about to begin and an ambitious documentary that is still being worked on. Screen Daily talked to Malick's producers, Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda, about his recent endeavors (including "To the Wonder," which just premiered in Venice – our man on the scene loved it) and what's going on with the movie Malick is currently tinkering with (including when we can expect that documentary).

Ah, selective quoting: it's a great way to stir up a beehive as Richard Brody from the New Yorker did this weekend when he cherry picked a comment Sean Penn made in a recent interview with French paper Le Figaro where he seemingly threw Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" under the bus.

Well, it's been nearly a month since any word out of the world of Terrence Malick, and granted this is just a tiny morsel, but it at least confirms that things are still moving forward.
