Cannes is officially underway, which means we're now less than a week from the arrival of one of the most long-awaited films in the history of the medium: the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road." Francis Ford Coppola wanted to direct a version of the book for decades, but having presumably decided he'd rather faff around with Val Kilmer and an iPad, passed it over to "The Motorcylce Diaries"'' Walter Salles. And from everything we've seen so far, it looks like Salles might have pulled it off, or at least come close.

The long, difficult journey from page to screen for Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" has been well-documented over the years, and one thing that has been consistent throughout is the passion and love evinced for the novel by all involved --particularly the godfather of it all, Francis Ford Coppola, who acquired the novel's rights back in 1978 at the height of his success.

Well, we got the trailer for "On the Road" about a month ago, and since then a handful of character posters for Viggo Mortensen, Tom Sturridge, Amy Adams, Alice Braga and Elisabeth Moss, so how about a few more looks at the actual movie?

With a Facebook page, new poster and a U.K. release date (September 21) surfacing recently, it was only a matter of time before a trailer for Walter Salles' long-awaited adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" appeared, and now it has finally arrived.

It's been a long journey to get "On The Road" to the screen. The beatnik classic by Jack Kerouac was never going to be an easy translation, but Francis Ford Coppola initially bought the rights over thirty years ago, and worked on the project for decades before eventually handing over the directing reins to "The Motorcycle Diaries" helmer Walter Salles. Even then, it's taken a while: the film shot a year-and-a-half ago, and was expected to land last year, but Salles has refused to be rushed in the editing room.

First announced during Cannes in 2010, "Terra" -- the next film from Walter Salles -- took a backseat as the director embarked on the lengthy production for the long-developing "On The Road." But it hasn't fallen off his radar, and with the Jack Kerouac adaptation wrapping up, we're heartened to learn we won't have to wait long for Salles to get cracking on another project.

In development for decades by Francis Ford Coppola, who remains a key producer on the film, the eagerly anticipated big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" has been a long time coming. But the project's lengthy journey might finally be seeing the light of day, as the post-production is wrapping up and European theatrical dates are slowly coming into focus. "The Motorcycles Diaries" director Walter Salles is at the helm, joined by a promising young cast in Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Tom Sturridge and Kristen Stewart, as well as veterans like Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Kirsten Dunst and Terrence Howard.

With filming taking place last year Montreal, New Orleans, Mexico and San Francisco, and with stills and a teaser poster for the already surfacing earlier this year, there has been a lot of guesswork about when we might see Walter Salles' highly anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road." But as it turns out, he wants to get it right, and while the principal cast and crew may have wrapped things up a while ago, the director grabbed the film's star Garrett Hedlund and two took their own journey across American to snag more footage.

Beat Generation Tale Not In Black & White As First Envisioned?Put simply, Waltes Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" is a film we're anticipating this year with as much excitement as any other. Unfortunately it looks like that wait will have to be a tad longer as any surprise appearance at the Croisette this May is unlikely, with one of the film's supporting cast members, Alice Braga, telling Pilula Pop the production is working towards a 2012 release after recently wrapping principal photography.
