Box Office: 'Warm Bodies' Tops Super Bowl Weekend, While 'Bullet To The Head' Flops

Box Office
Pale young leading man dreamboat? Check. Playing a cannibalistic monster who holds his predatory instincts in check? Check. Falls in love with a girl who looks like Kristen Stewart? Check. Based on a best-selling book, from Lionsgate/Summit? Double check. “Warm Bodies” took dead (har!) aim at the “Twilight” fanbase, with a little spillover from the “The Walking Dead” acolytes, coming together like a demographic stew to score the number one movie on Super Bowl weekend. Even if it drops next weekend, “Warm Bodies” should hold steady for Valentine’s Day, where it will be an ideal date night opportunity for couples who aren’t brave enough to come to the Swingers Mixer we have planned.

An American mayor, Israeli intelligence agents, professional hockey players, and Dave Grohl lead the way on the documetary front. Alternately, you could tamper all that reality with a heavy dose of cinematic illusion and façade: aging hitmen, gun-toting Lolitas fighting the good fight for gender equality, and the walking undead, oh my! (And yes, by "façade," we do mean "Sly's perfectly and uncannily preserved face.") Which direction will you take this weekend? Or are you watching the Super Bowl with the rest of America? While he's gone from a stoner coming-of-age tale to a cancer comedy to this weekend's zombie rom-com "Warm Bodies," one thing that has marked the the films of Jonathan Levine have been a keen ear on the soundtrack. Review: 'Warm Bodies' Exhumes A Zombie Romance Without Much Of A Pulse

Credit where credit is due, “Warm Bodies” does at the very least bring a zombie to the big screen that we’ve never seen before: one seemingly caught in the grip of an existential crisis. When we first meet the undead R (Nicholas Hoult) he’s literally and figuratively shuffling through life. His decayed state has also robbed him of his memory (he can’t remember his name, hence the initial), he’s not quite sure when his zombie life began and his “hoodie would suggest I was unemployed.” This is part of the pleasingly sardonic opening to the movie (you can watch the first four minutes right here), but unfortunately, it’s a tone that eventually evaporates from “Warm Bodies” in favor of something far more conventional.

You probably wouldn't be wildly surprised to learn that this week sees the release of a new zombie movie. After all, the archetype of the dead rising in their thousands to devour human flesh is a consistently popular one, and it sometimes feels that barely a month goes by without the cry of "brains..." coming from your local multiplex, video store, or Netflix queue (though actually, we have had a few months of respite; depending on your definition, the last film to feature the living dead was either "Resident Evil: Retribution" or the cast of "Quartet.").

After four years, and five movies, there are (until the inevitable reboot/spin-off/extra sequel) no longer any movies in the super-popular Stephenie Meyer-penned vampire franchise to look forward to/dread. The final movie, "Breaking Dawn Pt. 2" (our review here) is in theaters, doing the usual blockbuster numbers, but for the near future at least, that's it.
