“When I saw his movie,” said director Jim Mickle at Cannes earlier this year, in his opening thank you to Jorge Michel Grau, the director of “Somos Lo Que Hay,” “I was jealous of everything: the idea, the plot, the style, and jealous that it was playing at Cannes in Director’s Week.” And so Mickle went about securing the rights to remake the hit Mexican film, co-opting the idea, the plot and elements of the style for his English-language “We Are What We Are," co-written with frequent collaborator Nick Damici, which also landed in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight earlier this year.

This weekend's "We Are What We Are," an English-language remake we liked almost as much as the original, deals with a family that has a certain taste that's frowned upon in most polite circles. Simply put: they're cannibals. And cannibalism, in the long and colorful line of cinematic taboos, is certainly one of the more outrageous. But it can also provide the backdrop for seriously twisted, enjoyable, over-the-top films with the ability to scare and make you laugh, sometimes all at once. And with "We Are What We Are" on its way to theaters, it got us thinking about the best movies in which people don't just need people, they eat people.

This year has seen the release of what feels like an unusually large number of remakes of indie/foreign films, and this week sees another—Brian de Palma's "Passion" (read our review here) which is a remake of French film "Love Crime" ("Crime D'Amour"). While traditionally remakes of lower-budget efforts have given cause for much forehead-scratching and eye-rolling among cinephiles—usually bemoaning the lack of originality in taking a pre-made concept rather than tackling a fresh creation and often then repackaging that concept in as bland a way a possible for sale to a U.S. audience—in recent years there's been cause for some hope. The phenomenon may not be going away, in fact it might be becoming more prevalent, but the standard of some of those remakes seems to be inching incrementally higher—a recent high watermark being Matt Reeves' "Let Me In," a terrific remake of the terrific Swedish original "Let the Right One In."

With a new “Paranormal Activity” entry not arriving until next year, this fall looks to be devoid of any scares that audiences flock to as the nights grow longer. That’s where the Sundance and Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry, “We Are What We Are,” comes in. IGN has dropped the moody first trailer for the English-language remake and it looks to live up to its promise.

“When I saw his movie,” said director Jim Mickle in his opening thank you to Jorge Michel Grau, the director of “Somos Lo Que Hay,” “I was jealous of everything: the idea, the plot, the style, and jealous that it was playing at Cannes in Director’s Week.” And so Mickle went about securing the rights to remake the hit Mexican film, co-opting the idea, the plot and elements of the style for his English-language “We Are What We Are,” which played yesterday in Cannes, as part of, oh yes, Director’s Week. It’s a nice narrative to have surround your picture, and the admiration between the directors is mutual, as we reported recently, with Grau giving Mickle’s take fulsome, glowing praise, even calling it “an improvement of my story.” We admired the original, so could that dirtiest of concepts, the US remake, possibly live up to all the excited chatter? Happily, it does, pulling off the rare trick of remaking a strong original into a strong new version that honors the story but provides a different slant on it that feels as authentic to its transposed environment as the original did to its setting. It does a “Let Me In,” shall we say, rather than a Platinum Dunes.

Remakes of foreign horror films are almost always a bad idea, but there are enough gems -- most recently Matt Reeves' excellent, arguably superior to the original "Let Me In" -- to mean that we'll always be optimistic when one comes down the pipe. And the latest to renew our faith, if word from Sundance and Cannes is correct, is Jim Mickle's "We Are What We Are," We were big fans of the original film a few years back, and the notices have been strong for the Americanized remake, which has been winning over several fans since premiering in Park City back in January. And the latest supporter of the film? Mexican helmer Jorge Michel Grau, who directed the original film.

In spite of carrying the stigma of being an American remake of a foreign film, director Jim Mickle’s "We Are What We Are" received some positive buzz when it debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Since then, we haven’t seen very much of the film, which has been rather disappointing. However, now that it’s about to make its European debut at Cannes Directors' Fortnight, we finally have two new clips to share.

Mia Wasikowska has signed on to star in John Curran’s (“The Painted Veil”) new indie “Tracks.” The film will tell the true story of a young woman named Robyn Davidson who traveled 1678 miles through the Australian desert in 1987. It’s an Australian production and will be based on Davidson’s memoirs of the same name, and has already secured distribution down under and in the U.K. (through Momentum Pictures)
