Kids sure do love these CGI ‘toons. “Madagascar 3D: Europe’s Most Wanted” took over the box office for a second straight week, handily defeating holdovers and two new big releases despite falling off a bit heavier than your usual kids’ flick (41.1%). Having grossed $120 million domestically so far, the film is certainly playing up to expectations, currently performing in the vicinity of the previous installment. And it had better -- next week, the Pixar beast looms, with “Brave” taking both the family audience and a number of those 3D screens.

Weekend Box Office: 'Madagascar 3D' Bests 'Prometheus,' Solid Results For Both

There’s always an audience out there. You just have to serve it. And so it goes with the past three days, the second straight strong weekend of this summer that suggests business is rebounding from a tepid 2011. “Madagascar 3D: Europe’s Most Wanted” took the crown in a fashion similar to the first two films in this series, because it is a CG-animated kids film with talking animals, and you have to purposely run a terrible ad campaign to not make money in that racket. It's been awhile since kids and parents have seen a CG-toon with a heavy marketing presence -- you probably could have released “Rio 5” in this atmosphere and it would have killed.

Weekend Box Office: 'Snow White And The Huntsman' Bucks Poor Tracking Worries, The 'Avengers' Breaks Two More All-Time Records

Maybe that sequel will happen after all. Very clever, Universal. First, you announce that "Snow White and the Huntsman" is tracking a bit weak, possibly in the low 30s. Then, there's a "leak" that you've backtracked on a sequel since getting David Koepp to pen a follow-up. And now, with reports that 'Huntsman' may have actually connected with the young males they were trying to entice, registering a $55 million opening, there's great rejoicing for the film, particularly in the wake of the absolutely pathetic "Battleship" returns.

Sony said, “Lemme see ya Nod Ya Head! Cuz the black suits coming!” And if you look at this weekend’s opening numbers for “Men In Black 3,” they’re really only impressive if you were to go “Back In Time.” As is, $55 million worth of audiences domestically said, “Here come the ‘Men In Black’ ” this weekend, besting the $52 million bow for “Men In Black II” a decade ago. Granted, Sony might have been hoping for more with the inflated price of a 3D movie ticket, but with the pic opening #1 in 104 countries and taking in $202 million worldwide, they can't be too upset, especially considering the troubled production of the movie once pointed toward a potential disaster.

Disney sure picked the right time to get in on that Marvel action. After the first Marvel films proved to be decent-sized hits, the studio came in like a shark, swiping the studio up for a few billion, expecting similar results. Yet, not only has “The Avengers” handily outdrawn every other superhero film thus far, but it's number one at the domestic box-office for a third weekend running, with a $55 million haul, and is actually now Disney’s highest grossing film of all time. Take that, “Flubber”!

Weekend Box Office: 'The Avengers' Crosses The $1 Billion Mark In 19 Days; Registers First-Ever $100 Million Second Weekend

When a movie scores the biggest opening weekend of all time (by nearly $40 million, in this case), the expectation is that it should continue to smash records. So, at a glance, “The Avengers” scoring the largest second weekend in film history isn’t exactly newsworthy. Though most prognosticators pegged the film, following a stupefying opening act of $207 million, to level off in the vicinity of 70% or so. As it turns out, a lot of your friends missed out on the movie the first time around, and after losing a little more than half of it’s first weekend tally, it’s the first film ever with two nine-figure weekend grosses. That shit cray.

Weekend Box Office: 'The Avengers' Assemble The Biggest Opening Weekend In History With $207 Million

Box office: you just got Avenged. Combining the feature attractions of four separate blockbusters, "The Avengers" was looking to at least surpass the first weekend gross of "Iron Man 2," which pulled in a non-3D three-day total of $128 million during this weekend two years ago. However, few expected the team-up film to approach the final domestic tallies of both "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger," roughing up previous weekend record-holder "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part Two." That 3D-enhanced final installment of the "Potter" series still holds the record for the biggest opening day at $91 million, but "The Avengers"' $80 million Friday wasn't as frontloaded, and the film will finish Sunday at the top of the blockbuster opening weekend summit. Hooray money!

Let this be a wakeup call. For the second straight weekend, “Think Like A Man,” cast with actors actresses usually stuck playing “ethnic sidekicks” to more marketable white stars, didn’t just lead the box office, it dominated. With the film in slightly over 2000 theaters, less than any other movie finishing in the top eight, “Man” played to solid box office, with a second-weekend per-screen average of nearly $9k almost tripling similar statistics from the week’s other releases. There were four major studio releases this weekend, and none came close to this.

It shouldn’t have been a surprise, but “The Hunger Games” not only fell from the top spot after four weeks… it was pulverized. The Steve Harvey-powered “Think Like a Man” took advantage of a big ad campaign to debut to unprecedented numbers, scoring massive 'A' level approval from audiences reporting to Cinemascore while almost tripling its reported $12 million budget. This is the third big hit for Sony’s Screen Gems division this year, following “Underworld: Awakening” and “The Vow.” Not really the best studio to encourage, guys.
