For fans of gritty British crime dramas, of which there are many, Eran Creevy’s “Welcome to the Punch” looks very promising. It’s got a top-notch cast of talent including James McAvoy, Mark Strong, David Morrissey, Andrea Riseborough and Peter Mullan, and a pretty crackerjack story, with the ingredients lining up for a promising picture. And while we wait for a stateside date, things are moving right along overseas.

The release schedule for the rest of the year is starting to shape up, but there's still a few question marks, and one of the film's we're eager to get a date on is "Welcome To The Punch." The film is the sophomore feature from writer-director Eran Creevy, who made an impressive debut with "Shifty" a few years ago, and he's stepping up in a big way for his follow-up, an ambitious crime thriller, compared to "Heat" and "The Last Boy Scout," with a top-notch cast led by James McAvoy and Mark Strong.

We're almost exactly a third of the way through the year, and thanks to the announcement of the Cannes Film Festival line-up a couple weeks ago, we're now a little clearer on the timetable of some of the most anticipated films of the year. We know that "Cosmopolis," "Killing Them Softly," "On The Road," "Mud," "Rust And Bone," "Amour" and "The Paperboy," among others are done, and will be screening in only a few short weeks for critics, and U.S. releases, if not set already, can't be far behind. And the release schedule for the rest of the year is firming up fast, with films like "The Master" and "Seven Psychopaths" getting added to the calendar.

After playing an earnest lawyer in "The Conspirator," the noble hero Charles Xavier in "X-Men: First Class" and the squeaky voice protagonist of "Arthur Christmas," James McAvoy is getting some dirt under his fingernails. He's got Danny Boyle's "Trance" in the pipeline (though it won't arrive until 2013 as the director is busy with his London Olympics duties), he's currently filming the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's "Filth" and in the can is "Welcome to the Punch." And it promises to be explosive.

For a film produced on a government-funded scheme that gave its recipients a budget of £100,000, Eran Creevy’s debut film, 2008’s “Shifty,” has enjoyed a long cultural half-life. Although it didn’t get a decent airing outside of the U.K. – and even then was little-seen, in spite of an array of awards and critical attention – this hasn’t diminished the prospects of its director Creevy, whose follow-up “Welcome To The Punch” has been catching our attention since it we profiled its script when it charted high on the annual Brit List some months ago. Already confirmed to star were James McAvoy (who could do with off-setting his debonair know-it-all performance as Professor Charles Xavier with something more substantive), Andrea Riseborough (she of “Brighton Rock” and “Never Let Me Go”) and Britain’s answer to Jeremy Renner in terms of his heedless productivity, Mark Strong.

Andrea Riseborough has quickly been making her way through the ranks of the film world, and seemingly omnipresent on the big screen over the past year or so. With roles in "Happy-Go-Lucky," "Made In Dagenham," "Never Let Me Go" and "Brighton Rock" the actress has established herself as a talent to watch. Later this year, she will turn in Madonna's "W.E." but it looks like she's just landed her biggest role yet.
