East Of Eden Gary Ross Jennifer Lawrence
Though she’s looking to take a short break, Jennifer Lawrence still has her planned reunion with “The Hunger Games” helmer Gary Ross to look forward to. Per THR, Ross has officially signed on to pen the screenplay to the epic two-part adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” in addition to sitting in the director’s chair, something he has done for his last three directorial outings.

The end of summer is nigh and it's going out with a whimper (although this weekend's gross is up 16% since last year). The openers (even the third installment of the Cornetto Trilogy) couldn't compete with an Oprah and Weinstein Company-endorsed historical drama and a comedy featuring a Jennifer Aniston striptease. Sorry folks, the next few weeks look even bleaker with an Ethan Hawke-Selena Gomez chase heist flick and the One Direction doc on the horizon. With a sense of dread, looking out onto the dearth of late summer movies and waiting for the shiny-though-not-always-golden "I want an Oscar" period of fall, we give you this weekend's not-so-surprising and not-so-thrilling box office results.

Matt Damon, Elysium
Four new films opened this weekend, joining an already full box office top ten: a dystopian epic actioner, a raunchy adult comedy, a kid-friendly cartoon, and a family-friendly action-myth story sequel. Duking it out for the top spot, the R-rated films took the lead while the PGs held their own in a crowded marquee.

From the start, "We're The Millers" makes it clear it's not going to try very hard. In fact, the film opens by leaning on a montage/sizzle reel of YouTube clips as an easy layup for laughs in order to get audiences already chuckling and in the mood for the patchy comedy to come. The double rainbow guy, the streaker who runs into a glass door and even the cute surprised kitty are all shamelessly pulled together in what is eventually revealed to be a pretty thin excuse to build character for David (Jason Sudeikis), a thirty-something pot dealer who does little more than sling dimebags, attempt to hit on his stripper neighbour Rose (Jennifer Aniston) while pretty much holding an unreasonable amount of contempt for anyone who isn't him. Of course, by the end of the movie he'll get the girl, his heart will grow a couple of sizes, and he'll learn the value of family or at least caring for people. But before he earns those bits of realization, he'll have to go Mexico first.

While summer is usually the playground of all things big, expensive and explosion-y, studios in recent years have also found a receptive audience for R-rated laughs. Of course, there's "The Hangover" franchise which did it three times, and this summer saw Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock go restricted with "The Heat." Now as the season draws closer to an end, one more is coming and it's not for the kiddies.

In the works for years, with numerous directors and stars coming and going through various incarnations, "We're The Millers" finally firmed up a cast, got in front of cameras and has been made with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston leading an ensemble cast that includes Emma Roberts, Nick Offerman, Ed Helms, Kathryn Hahn and many more. The result? Well, another comedy where an excuse is made for Aniston to strut around in her underwear...

It's an underrated little gem, but the director of "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, is back. Truthfully, Rawson Marshall Thurber didn't really go anywhere, but 2008's indie “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh” wasn’t terribly well received. He's now back in studio comedy mode -- studio action comedy mode, to be specific -- with "We're The Millers." Starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts, Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn, Will Poulter, and Ed Helms, Thurber's latest has a bevy of strong comedic talent and centers on a veteran pot dealer (Sudeikis) who creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico.
