The Expendables 3
The conceit behind the Sylvester Stallone-led "The Expendables" franchise has thus far been niftier than the resulting movies: take a bunch of iconic, past-their-prime action stars from the eighties heyday of macho filmmaking, put them together, lob some old age jokes their way, add excessive gunplay and heat well. All the elements for a good time are there, but the first two movies in the franchise sagged and swayed, faltering under sloppy direction, limp scripts and a staggering lack of style. Thankfully, notes have been taken, problems have been addressed, and "The Expendables 3," while far from an ironclad masterpiece, is probably as enjoyable as this genre can get.

“The Expendables” franchise seems like both a blessing and a bit of a curse for Sylvester Stallone and his team of aging action stars. While the franchise itself has proven to be a hit, it hasn’t exactly been a career re-launcher for guys like Stallone and Schwarzengger whose films “Bullet to the Head” and “The Last Stand” proved to be unsuccessful in the box office this year. Still, at least they all have a franchise to fall back on and it’s fun to see what kind of a cast Stallone can conjure up for the next “Expendables” film. Speaking of which, Stallone has recently taken to Twitter to tease us all about who might show up for “Expendables 3.”

While the buzz on "The Expendables 2" was fairly muted and the domestic gross lagged behind that of the first film, the blockbuster action sequel still netted a cool $300 million worldwide. Given that making these movies doesn't break the bank, it's not a surprise to learn that a third iteration is in the works. While no director is attached, and the script has yet to be written, Dolph Lundgren confirms he'll return for the musclebound action franchise's third outing, which could even begin shooting this year.

So, was 2010's over $270 million worldwide haul for "The Expendables" the indication of franchise starter, or just the result of a novelty concept doing well in the marketplace? We'll find out this Friday when the numbers roll in for the supersized "The Expendables 2," but it looks like producer Avi Lerner is feeling very confident, with an eye already on "The Expendables 3." And not only that, he has a name apparently already signed, and a wishlist of folks he wants (but probably won't get) for the third installment.

Tax-Troubled Star Prepares Low Budget 'Expendables'-Type ComedyWesley Snipes' recent legal troubles haven't slowed him down at all. The martial arts star has started shooting "Master Daddy" this fall. The film is being described by Mr. Snipes as a "multi-racial action comedy" and he's calling it a combination of "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Meet The Parents." Because those two things go together like Hi-C and turkey!
