WHen Harry Met Sally
Twenty-five years ago today on July 14, 1989, “When Harry Met Sally” went into limited release (MGM carefully platformed the film, something of a rarity for a major summer studio release even then). It became a giant hit, grossing $92 million in the U.S.—about the equivalent of double that when adjusted for inflation. Rob Reiner’s film, made from Nora Ephron’s script, and following the titular mismatched pair (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan) who set out to explore the question of whether a man and a woman can be friends without sex and/or love getting in the way (spoiler: no), left a permanent mark on pop culture, influencing countless romantic comedies that came after. But did it also break the genre?

What If? Zoe Kazan
There's true heartbreak and then there's being stuck in the friend zone, and it's arguable that both can be equally painful. It's one thing to lose a love, but what if you never got a chance to experience it with the person you're pining for in the first place? Well, "What If" can sympathize.

What If? Zoe Kazan
Buzz has been quietly building for a little while around Michael Dowse's upcoming movie “What If,” which screened at TIFF last year to generally good reviews (though we missed it). That buzz was only slightly deadened by a confusing last-minute title change from “The F Word,” because that would have been too naughty, or something. It stars Zoe Kazan (“Ruby Sparks”) and Daniel Radcliffe (nope, can't think what he's been in off the top of our heads—something quite big, though), along with Adam Driver and Rafe Spall, following a young man who's stuck in the friend zone with a girl who likes a lot more than that. And now, the first clip from the film has arrived.

So, you might remember back in January, director Michael Dowse to a Toronto audience that his forthcoming romantic comedy "The F Word" was being retitled to "If You're Lucky." CBS Films were quick to swoop and claim that no such switch was occurring that the original title would be sticking. Well, it would appear that Dowse was right.

After winning the Best Actress Award at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival for Bradley Rust Gray’s “The Exploding Girl,” Zoe Kazan added a big-budget rom-com (“It’s Complicated”) and more indie dramas (“Meek’s Cutoff”) to her resume, starred on Broadway (“A Behanding in Spokane”) with Christopher Walken, and wrote the charming (and underrated) screenplay for “Ruby Sparks,” in which she starred with her longtime partner Paul Dano.

If You’re Lucky
One movie we heard some good word about at TIFF last fall but just couldn't find room for in our screening schedule was "The F Word." The film from director Michael Dowse ("Fubar," "Goon," "Take Me Home Tonight") is a rom-com starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, about a young man stuck in the dreaded friend zone with a girl he likes a whole lot more than that. Buzz was good on the movie, and it even landed on TIFF's Top 10 Canadian Films Of 2013 list. But it looks like a big change is coming to the movie before it lands in U.S. theaters.

And the lists keep on coming... We're just a few weeks away from 2014 (crazy, right?) which means lots of lists are being made, and not just for Santa Claus. Critics, pundits, everyday folks and your next door neighbor are drafting their tally of the year's finest achievement in cinema, and this latest rundown comes from north of the border, with a little twist.

The feeding frenzy that is the backstage wheeling-and-dealing at a major film festival has come to Toronto, and bobbing up from the churning waters are a number of intriguing bodies... We hear from our friends at Hitfix that CBS Films has nabbed “The F Word,” not (sadly?) the feature-length Gordon Ramsay movie we've all been waiting for, but rather a “(500) Days of Summer”-esque rom-com, starring Zoe Kazan and Daniel Radcliffe, and word around the fest has been pretty positive by those who've seen it. It's directed by Michael Dowse ("Fubar," "Take Me Home Tonight") and also features Rafe Spall and “Girls” star Adam Driver.

Queen Of The Night Ryan Reynolds
It's been four years since Atom Egoyan's last feature, the sleazy erotic thriller "Chloe," but he's making up for that absence by being very, very busy. He's got two movies on the way -- the already shot and in post-production West Memphis Three drama "The Devil's Knot," which he quickly followed up with "Queen Of The Night," lensed earlier this year. And now, the first image from the film has arrived.
