Even though he broke out in Zack Snyder's "300" as the memorable Xerxes, Rodrigo Santoro has had a hard time snowballing that exposure into anything substantial. For every solid turn like Raúl Castro in Steven Soderbergh's "Che" or Jimmy in "I Love You Phillip Morris" there's something like "Post Grad" or even "Lost" where he played one half of Nikki and Paulo, the most hated couple to ever appear on that show. On the horizon he's got the HBO film "Hemingway & Gellhorn" with Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen but that will be countered by yet another gig that's beneath him.

James Cameron memorably imparted a distasteful analogy when he was doing the press rounds for “Avatar” and journalists would ask what the filmmaker-cum-megalomaniac’s next project would be. “You don't ask a woman if she wants to have more kids when she's crowning.” snapped the tousled-haired millionaire. As unpleasant as the image of Jim Cameron splayed on a doctor’s table waiting for his gold-plated “baby” to drop from his loins undoubtedly is, it’s an appropriate metaphor for another trend that’s crowning for real: bland self-help non-fiction books nonsensically translated into fiction films. To wit: “He’s Just Not That Into You”, “Marley & Me”, “Yes Man” and now the stupidest one yet, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”, a fictional adaptation of the perennially popular series of books penned by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel that guide men and women who are -- duh -- expecting to bring a child into the world in the near future.

Where do we start with this story? The fact that this a movie based on a pregnancy book? Or maybe the fact that for model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker, it's another role where she plays a character with a name that is either male and/or sounds like a something given to an automobile. Maybe we'll start there.

Jennifer Lopez is at a bizarre crossroads in her career, where she's currently famous for formerly being a superstar, because at any rate, no one wants to see her in movies or listen to her music. Her last few efforts on the big screen -- "The Back-Up Plan," "El cantate" and "Bordertown" -- were outright duds. While on the music fromt, despite having a hit single with "On The Floor," no one bought her album "Love?" with only 183,000 copies sold to date a far cry from her previous effort "Brave" (650,000 copies) and leagues away from the era when she was moving units in the millions. But that being said, she's still a brand, an "American Idol" host and a hugely influential and popular figure in the Latino community and above all, there is still a curiosity factor about Jenny from the block that for whatever reason piques the pop culture mind. But movie execs are dumb, and while Lopez is getting another shot at a couple of upcoming movies, she will not be toplining as she did back in her "Maid In Manhattan"/"The Wedding Planner" days.

While Cameron Diaz is shaking up her image this year with the raunchy R-rated "Bad Teacher," and with the upcoming caper flick "Gambit," she's being careful not to stray too far from her bread-and-butter: safe, milquetoast studio fare.

Hollywood is always trying to find a way to hit certain demographics, and in trying to capture a huge swath of the female moviegoing audience, it's pretty much a no brainer to take the must-have pregnancy book, "What To Expect When You're Expecting" -- it has sold 16 million copies to date -- and turn it into a movie. Movement on the project first started last fall when "Whip It!" writer Shauna Cross was hired on to adapt the book. And now, the film has a director.
