Imitation Game
We're well underway on festival season: the Venice Film Festival is going into its second day, and as we speak, our intrepid correspondent is mid-air on the way to the Telluride International Film Festival, which kicks off tomorrow. An increasingly crucial Oscar launch pad as well as a nicely curated festival, Telluride also differs from other festivals in that it only announces its lineup at the last minute. And by the last minute, we mean just now.

TIFF 2014 Imitation Game The Drop Wild Foxcatcher
So, the question was whether or not the Toronto International Film Festival's new rules about premieres—telling distributors that any movie playing the festival in the first four days couldn't screen anywhere else (sorry Telluride)—would hurt their ability to curate an attractive lineup. Well, put those fears aside as the fest has unveiled a pretty solid first wave of titles. So what's coming? Where do we start?

Wild Reese Witherspoon
“She went method with the hair and no makeup,” says filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee, director of the Oscar-winning “Dallas Buyers Club” said last year of Reese Witherspoon. “We wanted to see Reese out there, not vain at all, not concerned with her image, and she went for it. Wait until you see her in the film. It’s a new Reese.” Vallee is talking about his upcoming survival drama “Wild,” and as you can tell by the aforementioned quote, it shows a distinctly different side of Witherspoon that we haven’t seen in a long time.

Wild Reese Witherspoon
There’s lots of reasons to be interested in “Wild,” Fox Searchlight’s upcoming drama starring Reese Witherspoon. For one, it could be her “127 Hours,” as it's about a woman in the wilderness all by herself and by all accounts, like that movie, it’s mostly a one-(wo)man show. Secondly, it’s directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, the filmmaker behind “Dallas Buyers Club” who directed Matthew McConaughey to his first Best Actor Oscar award earlier this year. It’s also written by celebrated author Nick Hornby.

The 2015 Best Picture Contenders, Premature pics
The star of "Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past" and the singer from 30 Seconds Of Mars are Oscar winners, "12 Years A Slave" beat "Gravity," Adele Tazeem became the most famous non-existent person on the planet, and no one's stopped talking about selfies for about 72 hours. The streets of LA are now full of discarded The Weinstein Company interns, who haven't seen daylight for months and are only capable of saying the words "Everything you are and everything you have is 'cos of that butler." Yep, the 2013/2014 awards season has come to an end.

Wild Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon continues her recent run of left-of-center projects—"Mud," "Devil's Knot," "Inherent Vice"—with "Wild," which has now started filming with "Dallas Buyers Club" director Jean-Marc Vallee behind the camera. And the first look has already arrived.

“Wild” has been seemingly on the cusp of being made for quite some time. The true story of a woman undertaking a 1,100 mile journey after suffering a personal tragedy has gone on its own little journey to reach the big screen, but now it's drawing close to an end.

We'll say this -- Reese Witherspoon sure knows how to choose 'em. Earlier this year writer/director Lisa Cholodenko ("The Kids Are All Right") told us that she would be writing and directing an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed's "Wild: From Lost To Found On The Pacific Crest Trail" for producer Reese Witherspoon. Well, it seems the Cholodenko is no longer involved, but another strong writer is now set to tackle the material.

Director Lisa Cholodenko recently sat down with The Playlist moments before her panel with fellow alum Shari Springer Berman and Nicole Holofcener at the Columbia University Film Festival this week to debate the glass ceiling and how it affects making their films -- during the course of which, Cholodenko let slip a couple of her yet-to-be announced projects among her other updates.
