One of the most talked-about films this spring was Paolo Sorrentino's followup to "Il Divo," the oddball roadtrip movie "This Must Be The Place." Starring a Robert Smith-channeling Sean Penn, the film is an odd one, a gothic holocaust dramedy of sorts about an aging rocker who goes to find the SS officer who tortured his estranged father, who recently passed away. Reviews were mixed, but curiousity abounded not only for the chance to see Penn do something quite out of step with his usual screen appearances, but also because of a score led by new tunes from David Byrne and Will Oldham. Well, while we wait for The Weinstein Company to release this movie, details on the soundtrack have arrived, though you'll have to import this one for now.

Despite a rather large and enthusiastic critical embrace of American neo-neo realism ("Wendy and Lucy," "Goodbye Solo," "Ballast," and a few others), there haven't been many (if any) new players entering the field. By contrast, mumblecore micro-indies are cropping up like corn, with young directors seizing the me-too attitude and grabbing shitty cameras to capture characters in apartments talking about relationships or focusing on their own inadequacies. Some are different, some are great, and like anything, you have to wade through the shit (which still get perplexing amounts of overenthusiastic quotes) in order to find the few artists pushing for something more. The neo-neo's are fewer in numbers but they're generally all worthwhile in some way, using their own brand of minimalism not to film conversations but to start them.

Duo Writing Original Music For Film, Will Also Feature Performance By ByrneItalian helmer Paolo Sorrentino made a name for himself at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival with his film "Il Divo" but he'll more than likely soon be better known worldwide for his upcoming music-centric revenge tale, "This Must Be The Place," starring Sean Penn and Frances MacDormand. The project won't just share a title of a song by New York New-Wavers Talking Heads though, as that band's lead singer David Byrne is going meta in scoring and writing original music for the film.

German avant-garde rockers Popol Vuh are producing a special limited box-set containing their scores for the Werner Herzog + Klaus Kinski buddypack of "Aguirre: The Wrath of the God," "Nosferatu," "Fitzcarraldo," and "Cobra Verde," plus "Heart of Glass," which features lead performances by hypnotized actors. Those not down with Herzog's latest (or dismayed that their favorite renegade director became a done-to-death Internet meme where all jokes go to die a million times over) will enjoy the trip down memory lane, as included in the collection is a near 100-page booklet featuring "unseen footage and images." 5,000 copies only, pre-order while they're hot at Amazon!
