Concussions are an issue for the NFL that is not going away. Just this week, football legend and Hall Of Fame quarterback Dan Marino sued the organization for injuries resulting from concussions, while the NFL has taken considerable criticism for not doing enough to protect players from harm. And it's against that backdrop which makes this news a lot more interesting.

Winter's Tale
Akiva Goldsman is one of those Hollywood screenwriters who has accrued a fair amount of animosity over the years, both because of his perceived lack of talent (he did have a hand in scripting "Batman & Robin," "The Da Vinci Code," and "Lost in Space," amongst others) and for his almost unparalleled level of success (he won a Screenplay Oscar for his work on Ron Howard's "A Beautiful Mind," and in the process taught us all that mental illness could be cured through the healing power of love). Regardless of what you think of him, Goldsman has genuine power, and for the past few years has used that power to secure funding for a lavish adaptation of novelist Mark Helprin's goopy 1983 supernatural romance "Winter's Tale." It is the ultimate Akiva Goldsman statement, mixing both his propensity for high concept gobbledygook with cloying, saccharine sentimentality. The result is a colossal folly the likes of which we haven't seen in years. It's truly unbelievable. We're still reeling.

Independence Day
Yes, no, maybe: those are the three answers Will Smith has given to 20th Century Fox about returning for "Independence Day 2" aka "ID Forever" over the past few years. But now it seems he's made up his mind. Almost.

American Hustle
The small screen continues to be a place of refuge for filmmakers looking to create work outside the tentpole-crazed studio system and the latest carpetbagger is none other than David O. Russell getting in on the action. Per Deadline, the “American Hustle” director is teaming up with “Erin Brockovich” screenwriter Susannah Grant for an untitled “upstairs/downstairs soap set at a private country club.” The show will skip the pilot season altogether and just go straight to series with a thirteen episode order from ABC. Russell and Grant broke the show’s story together but actual scripting duties will fall to Grant. The show will presumably air next fall.

And big shock here is really how tame most of their targets are this year.

Roland Emmerich may be preparing for the worst with two versions of “Independence Day 2” (one with Will Smith and one without) but at least one thing remains clear: the “After Earth” star hasn't grown sick yet of the sci-fi genre with a newly announced project on his plate., while elsewhere Tim Roth and Gérard Depardieu plan to delve into soccer's behind-the-scenes dealings and Michael K. Williams switches sides of the law.

EXCLUSIVE: While talking with director Roland Emmerich earlier today, as he does press for the forthcoming home video release of "White House Down," we had to inquire about the state of his highly anticipated "Independence Day 2." He sighed when we asked about the film, and claimed that it was, "A daily battle ... The budget, the schedules, the actors … " Still, he promised, "It's looking good." The director was more elusive, however, when we pressed him about the potential involvement of Will Smith, something that seems to fluctuate wildly every time someone asks him about it.

"Independence Day" (1996)
Earlier this summer, "White House Down" director Roland Emmerich said that Will Smith would most likely not be back for "Independence Day 2," the big budget sequel to his beloved sci-fi flick. But what a difference a few months and a notoriously costly flop make. Now Emmerich has said that Smith might return for the sequel as the cigar-chomping pilot from the original film and not, say, his twin brother. Anyone else now keenly excited about "Independence Day 2: The Legend of Steve Hiller's Gold?"

After Earth, Will Smith
Has there ever been any franchise quote like the "Fast And Furious" films? Since Justin Lin took over the series, the grosses have risen with each installment. His "The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift" collected $158 million globally seven years ago, and now, three movies later, "Fast And Furious 6" is set to gross over $170 million domestically within its first eleven days of release. Even with two challenging newcomers in the marketplace, this latest installment held the top spot for the second weekend in a row, and should become the second film in the series to cross half a billion in global gross within days (it currently rests at $480.6M globally).

Will Smith 5 Best Roles
When you reach the level of stardom that Will Smith has achieved, it can almost feel like you might have more to lose than gain (except in monetary terms) by embarking on anything as risky as a new film project. And indeed, the multi-hyphenate Smith had been largely absent from our screens over the past five years, until he showed up for last year’s “Men in Black 3,” which we might suggest, in being a sequel to a still-fondly-thought-of franchise, wasn’t the flier that arguably this week’s “After Earth” is.
