Wish I Was Here
"You gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life I swear," Natalie Portman says in "Garden State." With that, The Shins shot to massive fame off the back of "New Slang," while everyone swooned to Zach Braff's directorial debut, until they decided it was apparently one of the worst movies ever. (Guys, it's not that bad—there, we said it.) A decade later and Braff is back and causing more controversy with the Kickstarter-funded "Wish I Was Here," which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Credit to Braff, he's not shying away from what worked before.

Wish I Was Here
In the ten years since its release, Zach Braff’s debut “Garden State” has gone from Sundance darling to sleeper hit to pop culture pariah. The film still has its fans but the opposition seems to have grown louder, as every stylistic tic and soundtrack-cue has become a subject of easy derision. Between that film’s cooling reputation and the outcry when Braff turned to Kickstarter to help with funding for his latest, the actor-turned-filmmaker has faced the kind of backlash normally reserved for actor-directors who steal their source material and apologize with skywriting. Which is a shame, because Braff seems like a good dude and, like him or not, you can’t argue that his sensibility hasn’t connected with a lot of people.

Wish I Was Here
Just under a year and $3 million and change later, Zach Braff is getting ready to show off his (somewhat controversially) Kickstarted "Wish I Was Here," with the movie recently landing a slot at next month's Sundance Film Festival. And the first few images from the movie are here to show contributors what they paid for.

Even if we wouldn't say he's quite cracked it yet, we've got a lot of respect for the way that Zac Efron is trying to establish himself as a proper grown-up adult actor. After all, the "High School Musical" series would be an albatross for many, but Efron's quietly been banging out a diverse mix of parts, and while things like "The Paperboy" and "At Any Price" haven't quite paid off yet, he's heading in the right direction. The actor's got several promising projects in the can already, including rom-com "Are We Officially Dating?," JFK ensemble drama "Parkland" and Seth Rogen/Nick Stoller comedy "Townies," and now, hot on the back of signing on to Eran Creevy's "Autobahn," the actor's just lined up thriller "Narc." Sounding a bit like a laugh-free "21 Jump Street," the project's being described as a based-in-fact, college-set version of "Donnie Brasco," and will see the actor play a fratboy who's busted for cocaine possession, and who agrees to become an informant to avoid jail time. The film's set up at Fox

Damn it. Just when we thought we were going to be able to ignore Zach Braff's controversially crowd-sourced sophomore feature, he goes and casts Anna Kendrick. According to The Wrap, the "Pitch Perfect" star, so often the best thing in whatever she's in, has joined the cast of Braff's currently-prepping "Wish I Was Here." The actress will play the love interest of Braff's character's brother (Josh Gad), a young cosplayer named Janine. Manic Pixie Dream Girl alert! Mandy Patinkin is also in the cast (Mandy Patinkin Dream Girl alert!), and Kendrick will next be seen in the questionable-looking "Rapturepalooza," which opens on June 7th.

It's been rumored for a while, but it looks like it's actually happening, per Deadline: Al Pacino and David Gordon Green are teaming up. As reported a while back, the unlikely duo are pairing up on "Manglehorn," which will see Pacino as "an eccentric man who tries to come to terms with a past crime that cost him the love of his life." While Pacino's been doing some solid work on HBO, it's a full decade since his last great big screen performance (in Christopher Nolan's "Insomnia"), so the team up with Gordon Green couldn't have come soon enough, especially as we're hearing good buzz on "Joe," his next film, with Nicolas Cage. Photography will get underway in October

For anyone mourning Zach Braff’s absence from the spotlight post-“Garden State,” prepare to be inundated. The actor/director’s controversial Kickstarter campaign for his latest film, “Wish I Was Here,” may have surpassed its $2 million goal already, but the debate over his intentions is by no means over, even after Braff stepped up to the mic to deliver some clarifications.

Well, this should not come as much of a surprise, but Zach Braff’s Kickstarter project has been a resounding success thus far. The actor managed to meet his goal on Saturday, raising over $2 million for his film “Wish I Was Here” with over 30,000 backers listed on the website. When the project was first announced last week, it seemed everyone in the social media universe had something to say about it. Ironically, the divisive reaction towards Braff’s Kickstarter project probably helped raise funds much faster than normal.

Whether or not you approve of the millions raised by the Kickstarter campaign for "Veronica Mars," it's really all a matter of perspective. Some folks are just fine essentially giving Warner Bros. what is essentially a free movie, while others were a bit more hesitant to fund a picture whose budget is mere pocket change for the studio. The lines of ethics and charitable contribution are grey and shifting and certainly this latest celebrity endeavor will continue the conversation.
