Wolf Creek 2
This weekend, a wonderful alternative to the overblown thrills of the Hollywood mega-blockbusters comes in the form of director Greg McLean's "Wolf Creek 2," a down-and-dirty thriller from Australia that continues the exploits of Mick Taylor (John Jarratt), a serial killer from 2005's outback-set original, who has a seriously bad case of xenophobia (we had a more enthusiastic response than our reviewer). A few weeks ago, on the eve of production on his new project for Blumhouse, "6 Miranda Drive" (starring Kevin Bacon and Ming-Na Wen), we got to chat with McLean about why it took so long, the development of the screenplay, whether or not Quentin Tarantino has seen the sequel yet and what it's like working with Blumhouse on the new project.

Wolf Creek 2
“What the bloody hell are you buggers doin’ out here?” That peeved query is one of many threatening lines said by Aussie isolationist Mick Taylor, the cheerfully rational monster patrolling the outback in Greg Mclean’s “Wolf Creek 2,” the odd, occasionally effective sequel to 2005’s unhinged horror surprise. In the original, actor John Jarratt played Taylor as a kind of cannibalistic "Crocodile Dundee." (Surely we can all agree that cannibalism would’ve drastically improved “Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.”) Jarratt’s scenery- (and people-) chomping performance, coupled with the pleasingly dusty setting, made “Wolf Creek” a nicely atmospheric — if grotesquely brutal — horror treat.

Wolf Creek 2
The Australian outback is as beautiful as it is dangerous, and filmmaker Greg Mclean chilled audiences by emphasizing the latter in 2005's "Wolf Creek." That movie introduced the world to the deranged Mick Taylor (played with glee by John Jarrat) and nearly a decade later, he's back with another horrific tale from Down Under.

Wolf Creek 2
Yep, it's about ten years since Greg McLean took audiences to the outback and scared them silly with "Wolf Creek." The original only made around $27 million worldwide, but it was enough to spawn this follow-up a decade later, and it looks like it's more harrowing horror in the wilds of Australia.

Wolf Creek 2
One film that you might not have guessed played the Venice Film Festival earlier this is Greg McLean's "Wolf Creek 2." Yes, the sorta cult hit horror flick from 2004 has returned nearly a decade later with a sequel, and once again, it looks like things get pretty nasty in the Australian outback.

Wolf Creek 2
The Aussie horror "Wolf Creek" was only a modest success for Dimension Films in 2004. Granted it was produced for a song so the $16 million domestic gross was mostly cheddar for Bob, but cheapo horrors tend to be much more profitable on the whole (it would only gross $22 million worldwide). Not only that, reviews were mixed. The film only has a 53% RT score (Roger Ebert, The New York Times and LAT all gave it negative reviews), but some key critics were impressed. EW’s Owen Gleiberman called it “an unusually crisp and boldly shot Texas Chainsaw Massacre knockoff,” and perhaps more importantly, the film received a critical reassessment when Slant Magazine placed it on their 100 best films of the decade list

It has been nearly six years since the Aussie horror flick "Wolf Creek" turned the heads of genre film fans around the world. If you think the film about a group of backpackers held captive be a crazed serial killer was just for horror enthusiasts guess again. The film notched seven Australian Film Institute awards, including Best Director for Greg Mclean who followed up his debut shocker with "Rogue," a less impressive man-eating-alligator thriller that starred Sam Worthington. But Mclean is ready to head back to the film that put him on the map, as Mick Taylor is back to carve up more unfortunately travellers in "Wolf Creek 2."
