Box Office: Sony Finishes September Strong With 'Hotel Transylvania' & 'Looper' Topping Weekend

Conventional wisdom suggests a studio shouldn’t release two films on the same date, or even a week within each other, for fear of cannibalizing business. But this weekend, Sony took conventional wisdom out back and beat the life out of it, smashing records with the nation’s top two movies. Their animation division looks like they’ll have the biggest opening in September history with “Hotel Transylvania,” while through TriStar, “Looper” is set to be a superb debut for a heady sci-fi film.

In case anyone was feeling too happy, the potential ruin of the human race is out in full celebratory regalia this weekend. Inescapable hit men, broken education systems, a Puritan-era killing machine, and a grifting mommy make up just a taste of the gleeful subject matter. And – for a lift – documentaries are here in spades this week as well, particularly those showcasing major political and social issues. And sports. Sometimes. Oh, is there an election soon? Or are we just gearing up for basketball season? Enjoy, movie lovers!

With her performances in “Doubt” and “The Help” both garnering her deserved Oscar buzz, actress Viola Davis quickly attached herself to another awards season hopeful, the education-reform drama “Won't Back Down.” Apparently 20th Century Fox believes so too, and along with moving the film's release date from the spring to fall, they've released a number of clips showcasing Davis' acting chops as well.

While the following films have all been simmering quietly on the burner while we usher in the major tent poles of the summer movie season, their trailers promise that once the explosions and action die down, we can get back to normal (for the most part).

We really like Maggie Gyllenhaal. We really like Viola Davis too. We like this picture of the two of them looking happy and emotional from 20th Century Fox's upcoming release "Won't Back Down." We like that the film's supporting cast includes Holly Hunter, Oscar Isaac and Lance Reddick. Hell, we even kind of like the fact that Ving Rhames is in this movie. But that, I'm afraid, is where our optimism ends.
