Yesterday we got our first look at Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom,” and we also heard that both “Girls” and “Veep” – despite only having aired a total of five episodes between them – had both been renewed for a second season. It must be a busy week in the HBO offices, because hot on the heels of all that they’ve announced that they’ve made an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for a show headlined by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Film Will Hit NY & L.A. For One Oscar Qualifying Week & Will Reopen In Platform Release On January 27Largely known so far for straight to DVD/VOD fare ("Trespass," "Blitz" "Shadows and Lies" with James Franco) and some theatrical releases, (Chris Evans' "Puncture") Millennium Entertainment might seem, on the outside, like a strange fit for "Rampart," Oren Moverman's cop drama and follow-up to excellent 2009 film, “The Messenger.” But as the recent acquisition of Richard Linklater's black comedy, "Bernie" suggests, the company is in the middle of a rebranding strategy, and moving away from B-movie fare.

While Woody Harrelson has earned acclaimed for his post-"Cheers" dramatic work, the actor still likes to have some fun. In fact, prior to the TIFF premiere of Oren Moverman's "Rampart," Harrelson did everything from the raunchy comedy "Friends With Benefits" to the disaster movie "2012" to low-fi superhero pic "Defendor." And while those films are certainly a mixed bag, his next turn could see the actor taking part in some high class genre fare.

At its TIFF premiere earlier this month, Oren Moverman's police drama "Rampart" was applauded by critics all round with lead actor Woody Harrelson, in particular, earning praise for his performance as Dave "Date Rape" Brown (not kidding), a corrupt cop caught in the '90's L.A.P.D. scandal where the film derives its name.

That's the sage bit of wisdom Date Rape Dave (Woody Harrelson, and we'll get to his cop moniker in a moment) gives a new trainee in the opening frames of Oren Moverman's "Rampart," a searing and riveting look at a crooked cop's decay amidst the crumbling LAPD at the turn of the millennium.

Tonight is the world premiere of "Rampart," currently showing without a distributor at the Toronto International Film Festival. Anticipation is high for Oren Moverman's highly-anticipated follow-up to the excellent "The Messenger," and while Woody Harrelson nabbed a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for that role, three new clips courtesy of THR showcase Harrelson as the lead in what we figured was an intriguing ensemble piece. The film is a period piece that showcases the repercussions of the L.A. Riots on an embattled former Vietnam vet struggling with the responsibilities of the badge, and trying to balance his sanity and questionable on-the-job morals. Moverman's co-writer on the project, which is based on a true story, was none other than legendary crime novelist James Ellroy.

When you go to see any movie, particularly a genre picture, you are required to make a handshake deal with the film regarding the world it's trying to establish. If the picture can successfully convince you that, yes, this is a world of superheroes who are now retired, or this is a planet where no one has ever told a single lie, then you have no choice but to evaluate the movie on these terms.

Plus New Photos Of 'The Descendants' & Luc Besson's 'The Lady'Michael Bay's loss is the indie world's gain. Megan Fox may no longer be part of the "Transformers" franchise, but her next big screen role will be in Jennifer Westfeldt's "Friends With Kids," an ensemble indie that stars Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd and Edward Burns. Not too shabby and it pays to have famous friends.

First Synopsis For The Film; Ned Beatty Also Part Of The Ensemble CastEven though producer/star Ben Foster has said a 2012 festival unveiling is the likely plan, we're still kinda hoping Oren Moverman's sophomore directorial effort, L.A. cop-drama "Rampart," will sneak onto 2011 calendars somehow.
