After garnering considerable critical acclaim on its full release last year, Andrea Arnold's bruisingly beautiful adaptation of the Emily Brontë classic "Wuthering Heights" will be coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week. Following her unsettling but highly praised Cannes Jury Prize-winner "Fish Tank" -- a fairly grimy slice of British social realism -- with a romance classic, one already well-served by high-class adaptations, the film was seen in many quarters as something of an odd choice. The result though, to quote our grade A review out of Venice, was "superb," "groundbreaking" and "Terrence Malick-like," confirmation of a serious and formidable talent in British cinema.

A strong year, this 2012. Every genre had its share of riches, and we were spoiled by new films from Andersons Wes and Paul Thomas, further mythmaking from Quentin Tarantino and an inquisition into our currency from David Cronenberg. We saw the continued evolution of the careers of Jacques Audiard, Rian Johnson, Craig Zobel and Ira Sachs, while William Friedkin was revitalized, and, as if by accident, two more great films tumbled out of Steven Soderbergh’s pocket. By the time Steven Spielberg cranked out his finest film in almost two decades, we were awash in riches.

Every week (bar the very thinnest parts of the calendar), somewhere between seven and twelve movies end up opening in theaters. On some weekends, it's even more -- the first week of December saw eighteen films begin their theatrical runs. As such, it's hard enough for film writers to stay on top of things, let alone Joe Public, who doesn't have the benefit of free screenings, and DVDs in the post to take the edge off things.

Halloween is still a few weeks away, but, like the drug stores that erect candy aisles in August, the studios are rolling out the thematic material a little early. A reinterpretation of "Frankenstein" for kids (it's never too early to start them on the classics) is complemented by the horror-movie-of-the-week and a number of films that delve into more realistic terrors, like the demise of healthcare or the drug problem in the United States. Also, a Sarah Palin surrogate sculpts with butter. Spooky.

One of the most exciting talents to emerge out of the U.K. in the last decade or so is Andrea Arnold. The former television presenter won an Oscar for her short film "Wasp" in 2005, and made her feature debut the following year with the powerful, gritty thriller "Red Road." 2009 saw her follow it up with "Fish Tank," another kitchen-sink type film showcasing some incredible performances, gathering even more acclaim, and allowing the director to make inroads internationally. Her choice of a third film raised some eyebrows, however: Arnold was selected to helm a long-in-the-works film version of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights."

There are a number of high-profile classic literary adaptations coming out in the next few months, including (but not limited to) Joe Wright's stage-bound "Anna Karenina," Mike Newell's stately "Great Expectations," and "Fish Tank" director Andrea Arnold's "Wuthering Heights." We're not sure why people aren't really talking about Arnold's adaptation -- it was one of the absolute highlights of Venice last year for us -- but hopefully after this new trailer (courtesy of Vulture), they will be.

More Marvel mystery moves as the studio, with just a few weeks before to go before Comic-Con, has shifted its unknown 2014 movie from May 14th to August 1st. So what does this all mean? Who knows. While it was recently reported that "Guardians Of The Galaxy" was the title it was keeping secret for that slot (and it's largely expected that it will be 'Guardians'), as usual, the studio has remained tightlipped, so who knows what exactly its cooking up. But the shift is a savvy one.

There are as many adaptations and variations on Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" as there are theories about how Heathcliff gains his wealth and maturity before enacting his revenge. Thankfully, for Brontë-philes, that is still up for debate in "Fish Tank" director Andrea Arnold's adaptation of the Brit-Lit classic that tracks the mournful love triangle of Catherine, Heathcliff and Edgar over the years in the north of England at the titular farmhouse. This adaptation spent a while in development , being tossed from John Maybury (“The Edge of Love”) to Peter Webber (“Girl With The Pearl Earring”), until it came to her attention. The Playlist sat down with Arnold at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival the day after the first major snowstorm of the fest and discussed why she doesn't storyboard, her use of Mumford & Sons over the credits and why she chose to focus on the first half of the book (you can read our review of the film here).
