I'd have called you a liar if you'd said this six months ago, but 2011 turned out to be a pretty strong year for cinema. Indeed, whereas I've had to make up the numbers more than once in recent years, this time around, I've actually expanded it to fifteen to include everything I really wanted to talk about. I'm not sure it'll live with recent banner years like 1999 or 2007 – there was a lot of good, but I wonder how many of these will hold up as true classics. But then, that's part of the fun; you never know what'll stick with you, and I suspect this list would look very different in six months, or six years.

New Looks At Cathy & Heathcliffe In Andrea Arnold's 'Wuthering Heights'

You gotta hand it to Andrea Arnold. After her last film "Fish Tank" brought the director her most acclaim to date, particularly due to the stirring turn out she got out of a young, unknown Katie Jarvis, in a film that also happened to co-star somebody you might have heard of named Michael Fassbender, she easily could've done something more accessible and just plain easy. But she didn't. Instead, she decided to adapt "Wuthering Heights" with an unknown in the lead in a version that our man in Venice said in his review finds both the grace and brutality of the story and brings it "kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century." While we'll have to wait until next year for Oscilloscope Laboratories to release the film stateside, Empire has some new looks at "Wuthering Heights" as it gears up to hit cinemas soon.

This writer saw several films that verged on greatness at the Venice Film Festival this year, but none quite blew us away like Andrea Arnold's "Wuthering Heights." We'd liked "Red Road," and greatly admired "Fish Tank," but her new film, an adaptation of Emily Brontë's literary classic, is really something special, a masterly reinvention of a great tale, with the year's best lensing, courtesy of Robbie Ryan and a true command of cinema, taking on Terrence Malick at his own game and, against the thematically similar "Tree of Life" at least, winning.

Michael Fassbender Takes Best Actor, Chinese Surprise Film 'People Mountain People Sea' Wins DirectorWe might have abandoned the Lido a few days ago, but somehow festival organizers felt able to go on with the final awards ceremony without us this evening. With a jury led by Darren Aronofsky that also included David Byrne, Todd Haynes, Mario Martone, André Téchiné, Ejia-Liisa Ahtila and Alba Rorwacher, it was anyone's game, although for much of the week, talk had pegged Steve McQueen's "Shame" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "Alps" as potential front-runners for the big prize, the Golden Lion. However, the winner turned out to be something of a surprise, albeit one that buzz was tipped off to in the run-up to the awards.

Telluride is long departed, things are winding down in Venice (we're here for another 24 hours, but it's starting to look like a ghost town), and The Playlist team head off to Toronto this afternoon. But there's plenty more on the way in the months to come. Only this morning, AFI Fest revealed that it would open with the premiere of Clint Eastwood's "J. Venice '11 Review: 'Wuthering Heights' Is A Superb, Groundbreaking Adaptation Of The Classic Tale

One of the most exciting talents to emerge out of the U.K. in the last decade or so is Andrea Arnold. The former television presenter won an Oscar for her short film "Wasp" in 2005, and made her feature debut the following year with the powerful, gritty thriller "Red Road." 2009 saw her follow it up with another kitchen-sink type film, showcasing some incredible perfrmances, namely the drama "Fish Tank," which gathered even more acclaim, and allowed the director to make inroads internationally. Her choice of a third film raised some eyebrows, however: Arnold was selected to helm a long-in-the-works film version of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights."

When we first heard that Andrea Arnold was going to be tackling an adaptation of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights," it seemed like an odd fit. Arnold's previous feature length films "Red Road" and her sophomore, breakout effort "Fish Tank" didn't exactly suggest that the helmer had it in her for a stodgy, stuffy literary based movie. But then again, Arnold is no ordinary director. Her first decision to shake things up came in casting newcomer James Howson in the lead role of Heathcliff, making him the first black actor to take on the part. And now with the film set to premiere in Venice, our pals over at C7nema have located four brand new clips from the film that show Arnold has clearly put her stamp on Brontë's material.
