International release dates can be a curious thing. With international box office making up bigger and bigger percentages of total grosses, many high profile films open abroad before they do in the States, with "Fast Five," "Thor" and "X-Men First Class" numbering among them. But then others, such as "Bridesmaids" and "Super 8," which require a little more work, get a steady roll-out, taking months to make their way around their world. And then there are the prestige pictures. The vagaries of international distribution mean that some pictures will sneak out abroad after festival bows -- "The Tree Of Life" opened in France weeks before the U.S -- while others can literally take years to find a big-screen home, like Oren Moverman's "The Messenger," which bowed in the U.K. in June, a full eighteen months after its American release.

Last time we talked about the awards race, we were halfway through the year, and it was anyone's game, with only a handful of even vaguely serious contenders emerging both from wide releases, and from the festivals up to Cannes. Our conclusion was that only "Midnight in Paris," "The Artist" and "The Tree of Life" were real contenders, with a handful of other films looking like they might pick up nominations here and there, but unlikely to be in the final ten.

Andrea Arnold seems to enjoy working with raw, unpolished talent. She directed the completely unknown Katie Jarvis to huge critical praise in "Fish Tank" and the director is hoping to repeat that success with James Howson, another newcomer who landed the lead role in the forthcoming adaptation of "Wuthering Heights."

While it's definitely one of our most anticipated films still to come this year, Andrea Arnold's "Wuthering Heights" has also been the tightest kept under wraps. A new take on the famed tale, the film has a script by Olivia Hetreed (”Girl with a Pearl Earring”) and boasts a cast of smaller names including newcomer James Howson as the tortured Heathcliff being joined by Kaya Scodelario as Cathy and Nichola Burley as Isabella Linton. The film wrapped last fall and seemed like a contender for this year's Cannes Film Festival and obviously, it wasn't part of the lineup. So all signs now point to a fall bow and it looks like Arnold's take on the material is going to be something quite unexpected.

For her follow-up to the excellent "Fish Tank," director Andrea Arnold has done a great job at keeping her forthcoming adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" under a veil of secrecy. With filming wrapped last week, it was still a mystery as to who landed the lead role of Heathcliff of the film but as the film heads into post-production, we now have a face and a name.
