With "Immortals" and "Wrath Of The Titans" on the way, the big screen is not going to be lacking in buffed and greased dudes throwing spears and yelling faux-Shakesperian lines at each other. But "300," the granddaddy of them all that started this homoerotic, speedramping, historical-sandal-wearing trend, has a sequel on the way and may have found it's first leading man.

Even though many can't fathom this, the massive blockbuster success of "300" was not something anyone could have predicted. One of the reasons the film was something of a risk was its then-unknown cast: a lot rested on the shoulders of an unproven Gerard Butler, then known as the star of a series of terrible mid-level films, as opposed to being the current face of about a dozen truly awful big studio movies. Now that he's something of a familiar face, the producers of "300: Battle Of Artemisia" aren't letting a good thing go to waste.

Celebrate, ye lovers of bald naked chests and heaving male crotches! A spinoff to "300" awaits, and Warner Bros. has selected a man to captain this sweaty, homoerotic ship. Mr. Noam Murro, who previously helmed an indie called "Smart People" that few saw but all confirmed featured no shirtless men, has jumped aboard "300: Battle of Artemisia." While the film is set to focus on the villainous Dhalsim-like Xerxes of "300," Murro is being hired to mimic Zack Snyder's style from that picture -- that was really all that film had going for it. Oh, and glistening naked chests.

That Other Title Was BetterEarlier this spring, Marc Canton, producer of the upcoming "300" sequel "Xerxes" said that a script had been delivered by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, adding “I feel like it’s gonna happen and we’re close.” Well, they're nearly there and it has a new title.

No one really expected "300" to become as big of a box office hit as it became. The highly-stylized R-rated epic took in over $450 million worldwide, helped establish March as one of the one new tentpole months (and served as the launchpad for Zack Snyder's followup films "Watchmen" and "Sucker Punch") and started the Hollywood gold rush to adapting graphic novels en masse. So naturally, a sequel has long been eyed. Last summer Snyder and Kurt Johnstad started penning the script, and at WonderCon over the weekend, the always chatty "Immortals" producer Mark Canton provided a few updates on where the project was at starting with the title.

Updated: While Ritchie may have read the script and or may have thought about this for a moment. Warner Bros. tells us that the "Snatch" filmmaker is capital N, not directing "Xerxes." Case closed, however, it does appear that Zack Snyder is too busy with "Superman" to make this picture so new directors may be sought in the upcoming months.
