Man Of Steel
It’s a new day, so you know what that means: a “Man Of Steel” update. From the very beginning we’ve heard how much more grounded and serious Zack Snyder’s take on the iconic character would be -- he recently called it his “most realistic” film -- and while many chalked it up to Christopher Nolan’s influence (he's an executive producer on the movie and his name gets plenty of play in the trailers), Superman himself sets the record straight.

20 Visually Dazzling Movies
No matter what you think of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," opening this week in ultra-luxurious 3D, one thing's for sure – it looks pretty spectacular. Filled with lovingly crafted costumes, opulent sets, and computer generated imagery that makes ragtime New York seem like a quasi-futuristic metropolis, it is drunk on its own excess. It feels like the movie Luhrmann has been angling towards for a while and has finally achieved (thanks in part to the added dimensionality of 3D), for better or worse. It's a giant, gilded, vulgar monstrosity that overwhelms more often than it entertains. And it got us thinking about other movies whose similarly excessive styles have either been an asset or a detriment. So put on your 3D glasses, your best pink pinstripe suit, and grab a glass of bootleg liquor, for our list of 20 visually dazzling movies.

New 'Man of Steel' Photos & Banner; Zack Snyder Calls It His "Most Realistic" Film

So far. filmmaker Zack Snyder's made a zombie movie ("Dawn Of The Dead"), a glossy testosterone-addled swords and sandals epic ("300"), an ironic, deconstructed super hero film (which isn't that ironic or deconstructed, but whatever, let him have fun with words; "Watchmen") and a fantasy-filled femme fatales music video ("Sucker Punch"). Curiously, Snyder calls a movie about an alien who comes from another planet, is fostered by human beings and then grows up to be a god, only to see his new adopted planet become besieged by overlords from his former home, "the most realistic movie I’ve made.” Of course he's talking about his latest picture, the Superman film, "Man Of Steel."

Director Zack Snyder wants his upcoming superhero “Man of Steel” to do well; not just because it would mark the continuation of the franchise after a disappointing 2006 reboot, but also because it would cement his capabilities helming a "Justice League" movie if it succeeds, so he’s got a lot on his plate. Thus, it’s no surprise that he’s going to gush about the movie to get butts in seats, but has he revealed too many changes that might anger die-hard fans?

If 'Man Of Steel' Is A Hit, Warner Bros. Will Ask Zack Snyder To Direct 'Justice League'

You might remember that earlier in the year it was reported that Warner Bros. were waiting to see how "Man Of Steel" fared before deciding on "Justice League." And, well, duh. It's a move that only makes sense given that there's already a lot riding on the Superman reboot, and given the millions of dollars involved, everything involving DC Comics is a chess move of epic proportions. It's not exactly a shock WB roped Christopher Nolan in to bring this quality brand to "Man Of Steel" as an executive producer, and it seems they want to keep key creative talent in the mix if/when they proceed on "Justice League."

Man Of Steel trailer
Are Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer the best thing to ever happen to filmmaker Zack Snyder? An amazing visual stylist that deserves full credit there, Snyder's films like "Watchmen" and "300" look fantastic, but... how do we put it? They're often lacking real characters, heart and soul (or in the case of "Sucker Punch" just look like a bad video game meets a music video with little substance). But last night's "Man Of Steel" trailer looks as though Snyder may have turned a corner, perhaps thanks to the script, tones and world set up by Nolan and Goyer. Yes, it's only a trailer, but as far as mainstream tentpoles go, it's certainly the most impressive one in recent memory (perhaps since "Prometheus" last year, and yes, we realize that one didn't turn out the way we hoped).

Man Of Steel, Henry Cavill
Entertainment Weekly's summer movies issues is on stands right now and it's, as per usual, a rather powerhouse edition. You've seen the "Man Of Steel" EW cover and images from the Superman film as directed by Zack Snyder ("300," "Watchmen"), written by David S. Goyer ("The Dark Knight" trilogy) and godfathered/executive produced by Christopher Nolan. But the excellent article dives deeper into the themes and texture to the movie, which sounds much moodier and existential than any Superman movie before it. While not going as dark as "The Dark Knight" films, it seems that Nolan, Snyder and Goyer have done what they set out to do: put Superman into a modern context and thus affect moral dilemmas into the hero that we've never seen before. Here's 5 quick things we learned.

Man Of Steel, Henry Cavill
As per the madness and method Christopher Nolan employs we're about two months away from the scheduled release date of "Man Of Steel" and there has been precious little given away in terms of official photos or plot details. Thus far, all we've had to go by are the somewhat operatic trailers (they are pretty damn good), so at some point pretty soon Warner Bros. is going to have the final big push to get non-nerds out in numbers to see this. With that in mind, Entertainment Weekly has just published their summer issue and along with a smattering of new images -- including a pretty fierce one of Michael Shannon's General Zod -- there are a few surprising revelations about the movie.

There will probably be no movie this summer with a marketing campaign as controlled as the one for "Man Of Steel." Why? Two words: Christopher Nolan. The executive producer seems to be bringing this Batman levels of secrecy to the movie, with the plot still pretty much under lock and key, and with only a couple of trailers appearing so far. As for official stills? We've been reduced to magazine scans as Warner Bros. keeps everything in their vault for now, so the pics below will have to suffice.

Zack Snyder May Or May Not Be Developing New 'Star Wars' Film Set Outside The Next Trilogy

Get ready "Star Wars" fans because like it or not, the franchise is getting Zack Snyder-ized. While the hunt for director of "Star Wars: Episode VII" continues (with some rumors suggesting Disney has already chose the helmer, but have yet to announce it), the franchise is growing far beyond the next trilogy. Talk of spinoff films set within the same universe have been bandied about (Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg may be writing them), while the possibility of a TV series has reared its head again. But few saw this coming.
