A few minutes ago, Vulture reported that "Sherlock Holmes" helmer Guy Ritchie was evidently being offered the director's chair for the"300" sequel, unofficially known as "Xerxes." Folks stop and ask, wait, isn't this a Zack Snyder project?

Updated: While Ritchie may have read the script and or may have thought about this for a moment. Warner Bros. tells us that the "Snatch" filmmaker is capital N, not directing "Xerxes." Case closed, however, it does appear that Zack Snyder is too busy with "Superman" to make this picture so new directors may be sought in the upcoming months.

Speculation surrounding Zack Snyder's "Superman" shifted direction earlier this week when it was revealed that Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike were all vying for a lead female role in the film that was not Lois Lane (though yes, despite some confusion, that character will still be in the film). Guesses were made at what the role might be -- Lana Lang or Cat Grant perhaps -- however, the part might be one that we've seen before.

Well, here's a bit of an interesting twist. Following the signing on of Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent in Zack Snyder's "Superman," speculation quickly turned to who will play Lois Lane. But word emerges tonight that the hunt is on for a female lead for a character that is not Lois Lane.

Malin Akerman, Dianna Agron, Mary Elizabeth Winstead Also Mentioned With one of the big casting questions of 2011 answered on Sunday, with the announcement that "The Tudors" veteran Henry Cavill will be playing Clark Kent/Superman in Zack Snyder's reboot of the iconic hero, questions immediately turn to who will be joining the British actor in the film, and specifically, who will play the Man Of Steel's better half, spunky reporter Lois Lane. Natalie Portman had been vaguely linked to the role before Christmas, but if there was ever any truth to the rumor, the recent announcement of her pregnancy surely puts paid to that, and otherwise, word has been fairly quiet. Until now.

With the news that British actor, and perpetual nearly-man Henry Cavill has been cast as Clark Kent/Superman in the Christopher Nolan-produced, David Goyer-penned, Zack Snyder-helmed reboot of "Superman," things are moving full steam ahead on the last of 2012's big trio of superhero movies.

Colin O’Donaghue Also In The RunningYesterday, massive news broke that Henry Cavill had won the role of Superman in Zack Snyder’s new adaptation for Warner Brothers. Cavill is best known for his work as Charles Brandon on “The Tudors," but as predicted, the role went to a relative unknown, and someone who has experienced his fair share of audition hell. Cavill had been eyed to wear tights for "Batman Begins" and "Green Lantern" (among other franchises) and he even once before landed the role of Superman when it was in McG's hands, but lost the part when the project changed over to Bryan Singer who eventually went with Brandon Routh for "Superman Returns."

It looks like persistence has paid off for Henry Cavill. The young thesp was one of the frontrunners to star in "Superman Returns" and it looks like he stayed in good graces with the suits. As a result, Cavill is donning the tights to play Superman according to Warner Bros., who released a statement anointing the new Kal-El for the currently untitled film which is referred to as "the new Superman movie" and not, as people predicted, "Superman: The Man Of Steel."
