To the outsider, the Cannes Film Festival can be a nebulous thing. Even if you know the filmmaker or the cast, sometimes you need more context than a review to give you a sort of firmer grasp of the shape, texture and tone of a movie. Clips from the festival are landing left and right, so we thought we'd grab a smattering and ground you a little deeper than some of the reviews and pictures your may or may not have seen. So here we go.

We may not be head over heels excited about Jérôme Salle’s “Zulu,” which will be the closing film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but what’s great about Cannes are all the hidden possibilities. A greatly anticipated film might get booed at, while a film under everyone’s radar can be the talk of the town. “Zulu” might not fall under either category, but it’s at least fun to entertain the idea. Now two clips from the film have arrived, giving you an opportunity to get a better sense of what the movie’s all about.

There's a reason no one really remembers or talks about the Cannes Film Festival closing films...they usually aren't very good. The past few years have seen the Audrey Tautou starring "Thérèse Desqueyroux," Christoph Honoré's "The Beloved" and Charlotte Gainsbourg led "The Tree" all cap off the festivities...see what we mean? So, while any news from the Croisette is something we'll zero in on, forgive us if we're not holding our breath on this one...

If the name Jerome Salle isn't familiar, that may be about the to change. The French writer and filmmaker was behind "Anthony Zimmer," which was remade into a movie you remember as "The Tourist." He also helmed the franchise efforts "Largo Winch" and its followup "The Burma Conspiracy." But for this next effort, he's taking a bit more of a serious path in what could be his international breakthrough.
