This Is 40, Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann

When Judd Apatow's "This Is 40" was first announced, it was described as not a sequel to "Knocked Up" by Universal, even though the film is clearly a look at the lives of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) a few years after the events of that film. Now the new poster (like the recent trailer) plays with that tag, describing the film as the "sort-of sequel to 'Knocked Up'. " Nice wink at that original claim, Uni.

The poster gives us a vibe not that much different from the one evinced in the trailer. Pete's on the crapper with his iPad and Debbie is brushing her teeth thinking, "WTF, can't we preserve some mystery to our relationship?" Seems like that's going to be the general theme to the picture, which is frankly fine by us. We will admit, we will be curious to see how they explain the absence of Ben (Seth Rogen) and Alison (Katherine Heigl). Are they on vacation somewhere? The romantic in us admits we will be crushed if it's revealed they're not together. But according to some recent interviews with Apatow, they may not be alluded to at all. The mystery deepens...

Jason Segel and Charlyne Yi return from the original cast while the rest of the crew are newcomers including Megan Fox, Melissa McCarthy, Lena Dunham, Chris O'Dowd, Albert Brooks and John Lithgow. And in case you forgot, Jon Brion wrote the score as well. "This Is 40" arrives on December 21st. [via Screencrush]

Poster removed at the behest of Universal Pictures.

It really doesn't look like them in the poster- I thought it was a joke and they used their stand ins

It doesn't look like Leslie Mann, no matter if she's 40. This poster is not good.

I dont mind the poster, but the I think the door for the toilet is the wrongway (bad photoshop maybe), looks like it would hit the toilet, unless my perception is off.

No, I think you're right. I noticed that too.

    No, no, no, no, NO

I've mostly liked Apatow's films (the ones he directed, anyway), but this is a terrible poster. I mean it's not funny, it's just trashy. It may actually be one of the worst posters I've seen in quite some time.

This is the best they could do?

if he's taking a dump with the door open, where is she brushing her teeth? is this one of those high class two-room bathrooms that prevents the shit particles from floating onto your toothbrush? if so, this film will be about as class conscious as funny people.

Didn't know Phedon Papamichael was doing the cinematography. He's a good fit for Apatow. Love his work with Payne.

Not a big fan of Apatow's "Sweet and Scatological" style but if the trailer is anything to go this will hopefully nail it better than any of his other works. I'll take Paul Rudd over Rogen or Segel any day too, which is another plus.

I will bet one meeeellion dollars that Rogen and Heigl are in this somewhere. They're just saying they're not to preserve the surprise.

  • jonfen | May 8, 2012 3:09 PM

Neither one if them are in the movie.

@Mitchell I imagine that he'd be willing to forget her bullshit and give her the part, especially if it was only a cameo. Admittingly I don't know the guy buy Apatow doesn't strike me as the typical Hollywood "Cross me and your done in this town" type. Of course whether Heigl will want it is another matter (though given the rate her career is going down the shitter she can't exactly be picky at this point).

  • Mitchell | May 8, 2012 2:25 PM

Rogen maybe, but after spending so much time slamming Knocked Up I highly doubt anyone in the Apatow crew would even want to be in the same room as Heigl.
