Two Top Candidates For 'Carrie' Remake Reportedly Are Chloe Moretz & Haley Bennett

The unnecessary-but-it's-happening-anyway remake of "Carrie" over at MGM continues to move forward. At the beginning of the year, a random, but kind of inspired decision was made to have Kimberly Peirce sit in the director's chair, and now it seems a gaggle of young Hollywood talent is circling the title role.

Vulture reports that while Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") has already passed, Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning ("Sleeping Beauty," "Sucker Punch"), Bella Heathcote ("Dark Shadows") and Lily Collins have all read for the role. However, it's reportedly Haley Bennett and Chloe we're-calling-her-Grace-now Moretz who are the "main contenders" for the part.

So essentially, it's one relative newcomer and one "veteran" (for lack of a better word). Bennet has had a smattering of roles, most recently in Gregg Araki's "Kaboom," but came on most people's radar when she was cast in Terrence Malick's "Lawless." Meanwhile, even at the tender age of fifteen, Moretz is a seasoned actress, making her name on "Kick-Ass" and since then lining up a variety of strong projects ("Let Me In," "Hugo," "Dark Shadows," a recurring role on "30 Rock") all the while showing that she is a talent to be reckoned with for years to come.

As for the fundamentalist home? Peirce has reportedly "approached" Jodie Foster and is "interested in" Julianne Moore, but those both seem pretty early in the game right now.

It will come down to a matter of vision and finances we guess. Do the producers go bravely with an unknown (who will be cheaper too)  for the lead, more or less like Brian De Palma did the first time around with Sissy Spacek? Or do the filmmakers pay a bit more and bank on a name? Guess we'll soon see.

Haley would have been the better pick. She is amazing!!! AMAZING!!!

Courtney Love is a fantastic actress and could totally nail the role of Carrie's mother . She's a method actress and deserves a second chance in Hollywood. She is really fiery and can get possessed by her work. She became Althea in "Larry Flynt" and could definitely become Margaret White. I could see her winning an Oscar for this role.

Here's a poll regarding Stephen King movies being remade:

I hope that either Chloe Moretz or Haley Bennett should passed or turned down for the role. Because i prefer to see Chloe to play a strong-woman role, instead playing a tortures psychopath. And for Haley Bennett isn't she too old to play Carrie, I agree with Jeff personally I Think Dakota Fanning should get a role of Carrie Because is what Jeff said she has the most Spacek-like vibe

these ppl need to stop trying to make Haley Bennett happen...she is effin' terrible.

You will eat those words sooooon! Haley is going to be huge....Malick loves her!!! Why would you put down someone else really?? hahaha

    Hahahaa you are so wrong!

Personally, I feel Lily Cole is a better fit for the role of Carrie.

  • Sean | March 24, 2012 5:03 PMReply

All actresses mentioned are better than who King really wants: Lindsay Lohan.

I don't think either is a fit for the 'Carrie' character. I could see either of them in the roles of the mean girl or the reluctant particpant/good girl (can't remember the character names). Carrie should be more unusual looking. Pretty but vulnerable.

Moretz seems like a better fit just because she essentially played an outsider (or you know... a blood sucking vampire) in Let Me In. Interesting that Woodley passed. So, she'd rather finish up the the most awkward/horribly scripted/awful to sit through television series (really she's HORRIBLE in it, as is everyone involved) than work with a terrific director? Allllllllrighty.

    Don't remake this.

So instead of going with a girl who is naturally like Carrie White they're going to take a Vogue attractive starlet and "ugly her up". Fuck that noise. Sissy Spacek had an odd appearance that helped make you buy her as a social pariah.

I honestly will struggle to buy Chloe Moretz did not go through high school pined after by every man she meets.

**I should add- as long as she doesn't do that damn duck pout that she's known for... you know, pursing her lips together like she's effin' Angelina Jolie or something.

  • Ugh meets Yay | March 24, 2012 3:29 PM

Really? Granted Moretz is only 14 or 15, but she's not a bombshell.... far from it. She looks good with the right styling but she's not a beauty. I think she would be work well because she's awkward looking and can act... the 2 requirements for this role.

I thought that one girl from True Grit was chosen for the role last year?

  • Jeff | March 24, 2012 10:29 AMReply

Dakota Fanning definitely has the most Spacek-like vibe.
