Universal Moves Ahead With FBI Wedding Comedy Starring Steve Carell

Since leading “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” to box-office success, and being the best in the U.S. version of “The Office” for multiple seasons, Steve Carell has had a patchy record on the big screen, ranging from successes like "Date Night" to things no one saw like "Dan In Real Life." With the release of the magician comedy “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” and “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” later this year, the former 'Office' star may be at the start of a string of hits, and Universal want in.

Stakeout My Best Friend's Wedding Steve Carell

Since leading “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” to box-office success, and being the best in the U.S. version of “The Office” for multiple seasons, Steve Carell has had a patchy record on the big screen, ranging from successes like "Date Night" to things no one saw like "Dan In Real Life." With the release of the magician comedy “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” and “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” later this year, the former 'Office' star may be at the start of a string of hits, and Universal want in.

Deadline is reporting that the studio is moving forward with the Carell-starring “untitled FBI Wedding comedy” that was first picked up as a potential vehicle for the actor a couple of years back. The film, originally written by “Field of Dreams” and “Sneakers” writer-director Phil Alden Robinson, will get a rewrite from TV veteran David Flebotte, and is described as “in the vein of ‘Stakeout’ and ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding.’” Reach for the stars, guys.

Though the description and new rewrite from the man who brought us episodes of “Desperate Housewives” and “The Geena Davis Show” -- though to be fair, he’s more recently written a pair of “Boardwalk Empire” episodes -- gives us pause, we’re willing to keep an open mind. In the meantime, we’ll have “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” to look forward to, which hits theaters on March 15th.
