Remember last fall when Ron Meyer, the president & COO of Universal Pictures, said, "We make a lot of shitty movies. Every one of them breaks my heart"? Well, in the timeliest of fashion, six months later, Meyer has attempted to clarify what he actually meant, which is that yes, sometimes Universal sometimes makes shitty movies (he last cited "The Wolfman," "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Land of the Lost"), however, adding, "we make some good movies and some shitty movies. Nobody ever sets out to make a shitty movie.”
Considering that's pretty much what he said last time, sure, whatever. Also discussed in this conversation with the Hollywood Reporter, Meyer revealed that the studio plans to make sequels for both the upcoming summer tentpole, "Snow White and the Huntsman" and develop further Dr. Seuss stories.
While the Huntsman information is vague, THR paraphrases Meyer as claiming that, "while the upcoming 'Snow White and the Huntsman' film doesn’t appear to lend itself to a sequel, Universal thinks it can do more movies based on the character of the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) if it is successful." That will depend on its box-office, obviously, but 'The Huntsman' does look like one of 2012's more interesting summer blockbusters and we're betting it turns debut filmmaker Rupert Sanders into a huge name.
But as well as "The Lorax" did, which was double that of studio expectations, Meyer said don't expect to see a sequel, because that animated picture was self-contained and a one-off. However, “It does have us thinking about doing more Dr. Seuss movies,” he said, revealing that the studio is already developing a new animated version of " The Cat in the Hat."
Lastly, Meyer doesn't like 3D. "I’m not a fan of 3D as an audience member,” he said. “I’m too old for it. I don’t like wearing the glasses over my glasses.” However, he won't rule it out completely. “There is a place for it, an important place. I just don’t think we should kid ourselves that it is an end-all for the business.”
