A moody procedural, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cary Fukunaga ("Sin Nombre," "Jane Eyre") for HBO—that should pretty much explain why this is probably one of our most eagerly anticipated shows of 2014. But the fact that the trailers and teasers so far have looked even better than we could've dreamed is only making his an even more exciting prospect. And once again HBO has dropped yet another teaser, and damn, if this doesn't look like a knockout.

Perhaps the one thing you'll quickly notice are the changing appearances of the two leads and that's because the storyline for "True Detective" spans 17 years, with the two detectives crossing paths as they hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. And the entire effort is cloaked by the tone set in the eerier corners of the south, while the characters they came across certainly seem to carry no shortage of secrets.

Watch the trailer and a new clip/teaser below. "True Detective" arrives on January 12th.

This looks fresh as hell. Is it a one off mini-series or a full on new show?

From what I understand, they want it to be an anthology-like series where each season is a different story with different detectives.
