The first trailer for the French film is here, and it promises stuffy period settings and melodramatic stakes. The final film from Claude Miller ("La classe de neige," "Little Lili") is based on the novel by François Mauriac, which tells the tale of a young, intelligent woman in 1920s France who falls into a loveless, abusive marriage of convenience and seeks a way out by poisoning her husband. And that's where the intrigue lies, though when we saw it at Cannes last year, we weren't too thrilled, calling it a movie that "starts out very strong but ends as meekly as its protagonist’s story does." Bummer.
But you'll be able to judge for yourself when it opens on August 23rd. Watch below.
