Directed with incredible restraint by "Hairspray" and "Bedtime Stories" director Adam Shankman, we can't really tell if this is supposed to be intentionally campy or not. But either way, it's clearly on its own planet. Based on the hit Broadway musical, the story centers on a small town girl (Julianne Hough) who moves to Los Angeles with dreams of making it big. It's basically "Burlesque" but with even more hair product. The entire trailer builds up to a reveal of Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, a controversial rock god of sorts. It's Cruise doing Cruise via Frank T.J. Mackey or something.
Anyway, a zillion people star in this including Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Paul Giamatti, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bryan Cranston. It's the "New Year's Eve" of musicals. It opens on June 1st and will be powered by a soundtrack featuing Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and more. Bring earplugs. It's just Glee, but with lamer jokes. And decent music, crammed together to make bad noise.

I think it's supposed to be intentionally campy. Of course, I am philosophically against camp as a valid artistic form. It's just that I still enjoy laughing at it.

They really did their best to hide the fact that Tom Cruise is in this! And they did a good job.

Tom Cruise looklike David Bustamante, spanish singer but with false-long-hair... First weekend: 19.7 millions $. Total USA: 88.3 millions. Global: 189.2 millions $.
