Taika Waititi is about to make the leap to the big time, directing Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok." But before he jumps into the world of superheroes, he's showing the kind of edgy comedy he might be bringing to the franchise with "Hunt For The Wilderpeople," and the first teaser is here.
Making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, the movie stars Julian Dennison, Sam Neill, Rima Te Wiata, Rachel House, and Oscar Kightley, is based on the book "Wild Pork And Watercress" by Barry Crump, and tells the story of Ricky, who turns the lives of everybody upside when he goes on the run. Here's the official synopsis:
Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. He quickly finds himself at home with his new foster family: the loving Aunt Bella, the cantankerous Uncle Hec, and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home, both he and Hec go on the run in the bush. As a national manhunt ensues, the newly branded outlaws must face their options: go out in a blaze of glory or overcome their differences and survive as a family.
'Wilderpeople' is already generating good buzz following its first screenings, and we'll see if it lands a North American deal before the week is out. "Hunt For The Wilderpeople" opens in New Zealand on March 31st. [Deadline]
