All You Need is Love

Sun, laughter, love and family foibles all in a gorgeous Euro location....nope, it's not the next Woody Allen outing, instead it's the latest from "In A Better World" and "Open Hearts" director Susanne Bier, "Love Is All You Need." A departure from her more serious-minded dramas, this confection stars Pierce Brosnan and takes place in Italy where love and romance naturally get a bit more complicated for all involved.

As a young couple, Astrid and Patrick get married in Sorrento in southern Italy, and their two families come together, bringing their issues with them. There's Astrid's mother Ida, a hairdresser suffering from cancer who has just been left by her husband of 25 years, Leif. Leif shows up with Thilde, his new blonde girlfriend. And there's also Astrid's brother Kenneth, who has an explosive temper. Meanwhile, there's Patrick's father, Philip (Brosnan), who hasn't quite gotten over his wife's tragic death and comes off as a bit of a crank. Will he find love? Can these locations get any more gorgeous?

The movie has been making the festival rounds this year, and we caught up with it in Vancouver, where we found "there’s an entire season’s worth of a television show packed" into the movie that ultimately has some "diminshing stakes." Sony Pictures Classics will release the picture next year, so see for youself below.

Kim Bodnia and Pierce Brosnan in the same movie? Sounds like I died and went to Heaven. Not to mention, it looks like an unexpectedly charming little movie. Miles more interesting than pretentious pap like In a Better World.

I love Bier's After the Wedding but this movie seems to be too sweet for my liking.
