AFI Film Festival premiered Scott Cooper's "Out of the Furnace" over the weekend, and we were there. And the verdict? Well, according to Charlie Schmidlin, the film starts strong but loses power by time the third act rolls around, essentially "creating a complexity rather than letting its characters show us one." Still, for those of waiting anxious to see the film nonetheless, it's still one high on our watch list before the end of the year and another look at the movie is keeping up that excitement.
A new, extended TV spot has dropped with enough new footage to make it worth a peek. The film assembles a helluva cast, with Christian Bale leading the charge as an ex-con who has to get his military veteran younger brother (Casey Affleck) out of some trouble when he gets mixed up in bare-knuckle boxing to make ends meet, crossing paths with the slimy Willem Dafoe and the slimier Woody Harrelson. It's a gritty, Rust Belt-set tale and these new pics from the movie highlight the dirt-under-the-fingernails approach.
"Out of the Furnace" arrives on December 6th.
