Watch: Matthew McConaughey Goes To Outer Space In New Trailer For Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar'

"The world doesn’t need any more engineers. We didn’t run out of planes and television sets… we ran out of food," David Oyelowo intones in the new trailer for Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar." And the answer to save humanity's fate lies up above, in the stars.

As per usual, Christopher Nolan has been keeping as much under wraps as possible when it comes to his latest film, but this new trailer certainly opens up the door a lot more. Matthew McConaughey leads the film as an ordinary man, engineer and former pilot, sent into outer space to save everyone from certain doom. As you might expect, there is some striking imagery in here, though Nolan is still keeping the space stuff as more of a tease. And while this might seem like a big curtain lift, we'd wager that this is all first and second act stuff. Nolan always likes to keep the goods for when you see it in theaters. But here's a little semi-spoiler (but not really if you're even half paying attention): it's been confirmed that Jessica Chastain plays the older version of Mackenzie Foy's daughter character.

Co-starring Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Wes Bentley, Timothee Chalamet, Topher Grace, and Matt Damon, "Interstellar" opens on November 7th.

    Thanks for spoiling.

    True. Its pretty obvious.

In case it isn't sarcasm, is it really a spoiler? It seems pretty obvious in the trailer, same jacket as McConaughey and all. That and Casey Affleck playing the older version of the boy in the truck.

"it's been confirmed that Jessica Chastain plays the older version of Mackenzie Foy's daughter character."

What the f?! Did you just spoil the entire movie?

  • skywater | May 16, 2014 3:04 PMReply

    WOW! Amazing.

More Spielberg than Kubrick. I thought it was going to be the other way. Still looks great.

  • That Kid | May 16, 2014 2:12 PMReply

Well, since Nolan has always talked of his admiration for Kubrick I'm guessing this is his attempt at his own "2001"

  • bohmer | May 16, 2014 2:03 PMReply

This looks very interesting and doesn't give too much away. Love the realistic approach to the genre.

I guess you can make the excuse it's a teaser, but if I'm not shown anything that makes me want to see more, it didn't do it's job. I found this trailer highly underwhelming. When compared to his past teasers (an I'm taking about the second ones, not the first, show no footage VoiceOver ones) Inception and the The Dark Knights looked much more interesting at this stage. I remember rewatching those dozens of times. I don't wanna rematch this one even once. I mean to me it just looked boring. And with no real antagonist, besides nature I guess, I don't know what he plans to use to deliver the drama, excitement, and suspense. I have a feeling it's gonna be a college lecture set to images. And this is all coming from a Chris Nolan fan.

This trailer doesn't really grab me. The farmer angle seems kind of (sorry) corny. Nice visuals but nothing extraordinary. Nothing like Inception's "Look at that!" The dialog seems flat, too. Hoping for more from the actual film.

I'm a bit meh on Chris Nolan sometimes, I think Memento is his only masterpiece so far, I like his other films but they're a bit messy and more generic than people like to think. But I think this trailer looks amazing, I like the idea of Nolan doing something far more thoughtful and visually spectacular without a bunch of messy boring action stuff. Those shots in space look incredible, the cast is probably the best he's assembled, McConaughey has proved he's a fantastic actor and Casey Affleck, Chastain and Hathaway are all brilliant. And if Nolan is going to take inspiration from Kubrick and 2001 then man, that makes me excited.

I share your concern. Lets hope it's just because this is a trailer.

  • DG | May 16, 2014 1:38 PMReply

Was hoping for a little more of a tease as far as the time travel/alternate dimensions angle is concerned

  • Hugo | May 16, 2014 1:37 PMReply I wager from the trailer that Jessica Chastain plays his grown up daughter?

  • DG | May 16, 2014 2:02 PM

And maybe Casey Affleck is his grown up son , or whoever the boy was in the truck?

  • 1974 | May 16, 2014 1:49 PM

Yes, this was actually a speculation long ago when she was announced as a third lead. My assumption is that her role is slightly bigger in new draft.

  • Chris138 | May 16, 2014 1:34 PMReply

Cool trailer, but... hasn't anyone in this movie ever heard of Agricultural Engineering?

  • StephenM | May 16, 2014 5:55 PM

    I was thinking that too.
