With "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" joining "The Host" and "Beautiful Creatures" on the YA franchise woodpile, Summit Entertainment are hoping they've figured out the secret recipe for franchise success with "Divergent." Have they got it? Well, they're trying damn hard to get right to the core audience.

The first teaser trailer for the movie has dropped tonight, aimed squarely at the target audience, and we'll leave it to you to tell us if it works. Is Shailene Woodley the next Jennifer Lawrence or Kristen Stewart? Can this movie distinguish itself from the rest of the YA pack where concepts seem like Mad Lib variations of each other? Will the core audience actually show up for this or just cry on Twitter? Here's the official synopsis:

DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late. DIVERGENT is based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth.

Co-starring Kate Winslet, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort and more, "Divergent" opens on March 21, 2014. Trailer below along with an infographic we don't understand.

The main reason that this trailer isn't having the best impact on people is because its not really cut like a trailer - it appears that the studio have selected clips and shoved them together... I've read the book and loved it - but I can see the studios problem as it is a complex idea to get across in two minutes or less... Winslet is amazing and Shailene is too! Hopefully the first theatrical trailer will be better! (Similar example: See The Hunger Games: Catching Fire teaser trailer then watch The Hunger Games: Catching Fire theatrical trailer - it's much better!

Seems as though THG fans are threatened and feel the need to come and put down Woodley while praising the overrated Jennifer Lawrence.

this movie better be good. I was an extra in it. It looked amazing while we were filming I hoping its as equally if not more amazing.

all of you are saying shailene has no charisma. i completely disagree. she's a golden globe nominee, you should watch the descendants and also she was amazing in the spectacular now and she's starring next on the adaptation of the fault in our stars guess that says something

This will most likely join other YA bombs like The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures. Divergent looks really dull and Shailene Woodley continues to prove she has zero charisma. The film's marketing team should change their approach and focus on Kate Winslet even though she isn't the lead. Winslet will be, and perhaps already is, the only reason why people will see this.

Well, that was bland...and confusing and the trailer doesn't leave me curious to see this film when it's released. The other thing that REALLY stands out?....Woodley does not have the screen presence that Jennifer Lawrence has. Jennifer Lawrence has charisma to spare, where Shailene Woodley has none...she seems so bland. Yikes. It's not a good sign for a trailer when all you can think is...gee, I wonder who Kate Winslet's colorist is...I wonder if I should try that shade of blonde?....and that's the biggest take away.

    M. , Jennifer Lawrence can be very bland - especially with the first Hunger Games and the trailer for Catching Fire . Give me a break.

I have seen three sites' coverage of this thing and not one mentions who the director is. Says something.

@LIZ Academy Award Nominee Gary Ross directed The Hunger Games.

(Best Original Screenplay with Anne Spielberg for Big, 1988)

Neil Burger has directed some good films. The Lucky Ones (2008) was enjoyable and The Illusionist (2006) is solid. I am worried about Woodley, though. She could choke as the lead.

@BS.....The Hunger Games had a much better trailer, more exciting and then there was the "I volunteer" part of the sold the trailer /film. Oh, and yeah, Jennifer Lawrence kicked ass in the film (read the reviews). Lawrence has charisma and screen presence. Woodley does not. Perhaps marketing could cobble together another trailer because this one both sucks and blows. Based on the trailer and Woodley's total lack of charisma, I have zero interest in seeing the film.

I haven't the slightest idea who directed The Hunger Games. So what?

  • Mark I | August 25, 2013 9:37 PMReply

Looks pretty bad; THG appears to be the exception to the rule when it comes to YA adaptations
(but that's mostly due to Jennifer Lawrence bringing gravity to the role....Woodley might not have a chance with this, since the story looks kind of lame).

  • Jare | August 25, 2013 9:23 PMReply

    Looks bland as f**k.

  • kindred spirit | August 25, 2013 9:15 PMReply

This looks terrible. Winslet is the only good thing. Woodley doesn't have the same screen presence as Lawrence.
