With Marvel and Lucasfilm doing their thing, Disney is now trying to reboot and extend their own brands for the 21st century. The live action "Cinderella" is now shooting, an "Alice In Wonderland" sequel is cooking and next year brings "Maleficent," which is not only a standalone movie for the villain of the 1959 animated classic "Maleficent," but it gives Angelina Jolie a chance to play bad and scare the crap out of little kids. “I’d go over to the children and say hi,” she said this summer at D23, recalling instances when the production had young visitors on set. “And they would scream and run off. One little boy actually said Mommy, ‘Please, tell the mean witch to please stop talking to me.’”

Well, we now have a taste of what is brewing in the movie as the first trailer has now arrived. Nevermind those reports about reshoots, this movie actually moved its release date forward, which suggests everything is moving according to (slightly altered) plans. And with a tale promising revenge, betrayal and curses and featuring a pretty stellar supporting cast—Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manvillethis has more than enough potential. Here's the official synopsis:

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

So, thoughts? Is this what you thought it was going to be? Should they have left this spinoff alone? Weigh in below. "Maleficent" opens on May 30, 2014.

"...more then...". Come on man... Anyway, I hope this is as scary as Sleeping Beauty.

I am genuinely surprised Angelina Jolie is not using her awful Russian accent for the part. That seems to be her go-to voice when she's not playing Angelina Jolie.

Its not quite Wicked. Very faithful to the look of the original. But they're holding back on Maleficent's scenes, would like to see more. Disney probably already has a ride or two lined up after this releases so they're going to do this right.
