Out Of The Furnace Christian Bale Woody Harrelson

"RELEAAAAAASSSE MEEEEEEEEEEE," Eddie Vedder bellows all over this first trailer for Scott Cooper's "Out of the Furnace," adding a pretty dense layer of fromage to what looks like a pretty gritty little drama. Let's hope it's just a case of good movie, not so hot trailer? We'll see, but let's dive in...

As you know, the marks on this one being something solid are all over it, starting with the cast—Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe—followed by the guy who made "Crazy Heart" into a sleeper hit behind camera. And though the story on the surface seems a bit familiar—brother goes on a quest to find his younger sibling who falls into the clutches of a crime ring—this looks very well realized. Not only from the grimy Rust Belt setting, but the actors all seem to be bringing their A-game, with Bale's tortured lead running up against Harrelson's crazy baddie (though, can we stop with villains eating candy? That cliché needs to die....).

An Oscar season slot awaits, as "Out of the Furnace" will put you on boil starting on November 27th.

Any particular reason Forest Whitaker was left out of your description of the "solid" cast? Last time I checked, Zoe Saldana didn't have an Oscar...or even a nomination.

The trailer seamlessly captivates a tumultuous sense of urban decay. Could easily be a hit or miss.

Cast looks amazing, and Cooper is clearly a talented director, but the familial revenge stuff is stale. I swear we've seen this a thousand times. Winters Bone? I imagine there are better and more original stories to tell involving these characters in this place. As it stands, lots of bluster and guns

Casey Affleck, Ben's lil bro, IMO is a great actor! He brings such realism to each character he portrays, he's so underrated. Can't wait to see it.

    High for this.

So looking forward to this one. That cast is amazing, and yes, setting looks great. I prefer the rundown town, rundown people revenge story to others ... the song doesn't quite fit, but I do like it's inclusion seemhow Cooper said it was something he was thinking of in the script. Also, if Vedder is writing some of his softer new song varieties, I think those could match the film better in look. Also, Woody v Bale feels like a perfect combo.

looks good and has a fantastic cast. After seeing The Assassination of Jesse James..., I'll see anything with Casey Affleck. now I have this and Ain't Them Bodies Saints to look forward to.
