If you're going to make a movie about vampires, there's going to be blood. And Neil Jordan certainly brings the red stuff in "Byzantium" (though maybe not as much as you might expect), his new take on the genre, which takes a look at the familiar vampire world, but from a female perspective.
The movie centers on Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan, mother and daughter, united in their undead status, working to survive and get by particularly as the brotherhood of vampires still exclusively belongs to the domain of men. Things get complicated when Arterton's brothel business and Ronan's relationship with a sickly boy (Caleb Landry Jones) exposes others to their secret, and everything is put into jeopardy. It doesn't really all work, but the ambition is admirable, and the actors are always worth watching.
"Byzantium" opens on June 28th. Watch the new international trailer below.
